The Black Swallowtail

Papilio polyxenes asreius stoll

Chrysalis Stage: Most of the chrysalis are green with a yellow back, some of them turn brown.
Both kinds have hatched.

Size: The Black Swallowtail is 2.75 - 3.5 inches in width.

Food: The caterpillar feeds on wild or cultivated carrots, parsley, celery, and dill.

Polyxenes has a black body with yellow spots along each side. The wings are black, dorsal side, with two bands of yellwo markings on down laterally. On the lower wings, the female has a destinctive blue band of coloration between the two yellow bands, with a red spot near the tails,whereas the males has less blue with more distinctive red spots. On the vertical sides, there are brilliant range - red and blue markings located laterally, on the lower wings, and two rows of yellow markings located laterally on the upper wings.

Swallowtail Range: They are found throughtout North America , and north into Canada

Very good photo of this caterpillar!
It is very similar to the Papilio machaon.
Very good on colours, POV and BG!
Good on details too!

I posted a Black Swallowtail Butterfly, and then I find this excellent Black Swallowtail Caterpillar. The colors and patterns of this guy are very colorful and unique. The overall composition and framing look excellent. It's a beauty!

it's such a beautiful and big caterpillar, I never had the chance to see one with my own eyes, swallowtails are very rare in Germany and I never saw a black one, only the yellows.
