The first time I flew to Washington, D.C., the government was closed. Hurricane Isabel had swept up the East Coast of the U.S. just a day before, hitting the nation's capitol hard enough that they closed operations for a few days. After a brief delay at the airport in Houston, we took off. Once we were in the air, they told they didn't know if we were going to be able to land at Reagan National Airport. It was still officially closed, and had been most of the morning. Continental decided to get us in the air and find out later. At one point there was talk of diverting us to Dulles Airport, which would have meant a $40 cab ride instead of a $15 one. Fortunately Reagan opened up before we landed.
The next morning I walked to the National Mall to look at some of the monuments. Remnants of the hurricane were scattered everywhere. This tree was only one of dozens that had been literally snapped at the base or ripped up by the roots.
I cropped the image a little, adjusted the levels, and sharpened it before resizing. |
