[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Bloom (well unfortunately just past) of the Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum). This was quite the botanical event at the Washington DC Botanic Garden. The last time this plant bloomed, was about 10 years ago.

The titan arum is one of the largest known un-branched flower structures. It is native only to the tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia. The titan arum emerges from, and stores energy in, a huge underground stem called a corm. The plant blooms on an unpredictable schedule, when sufficient energy is accumulated, usually after several year.

The titan arum is a member or the Aroid Family (Araceae) that include skunk cabbage, calla lilies, caladiums, and jack-in-the-pulpit. At full bloom it is well known for smelling like rotting meat, hence its other common name, "corpse flower."

Hi Robin, I saw photos of a similar corpse flower last year in different stages of growth, and this is very interesting. It is good to see it so close, and not be able to smell it. TFS,
Janice
