American Cancer Root or Squawroot, member of the Orobanchaceae, an unusual parasitic plant found in woodlands in eastern North America. It produces no chlorophyll, instead depending on its host for food. It's parasitic on the roots of Oak and Beech.
These were photographed in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near Irvine, Kentucky in the Daniel Boone National Forest. |
