Roseate Spoonbill
Ajaia ajaja
Lenght: 28"
Wingspan: 53"
Sexes similar
Large, long-legged wader with a long neck
Long, spatulate bill
Hold neck extended in flight
Adult:
Red eyes
Bill grayish with dark mottling
Head greenish and unfeathered w/ black nape band
White neck and back
Pink back and wings
Legsred, feet dark
Immature:
Yellow eyes
Bill yellowish
White or very pale pink body plumage
White feathered head
Fact:
No other bird has a similar bill. Flamingos are also long-legged pink wading birds but have short, thick, hooked bills and black in the flight feathers.
I took this at a place in Lafayette called Lake Martin. It is a very good place this time of the year to get pictures of these colorful birds. Along with the spoonbills, the egrets, herons ducks and all come here to breed and hatch their young. Great place to go!
Thanks for looking. |

A couple of hours ago I'd never heard of a spoonbill, now they're everywhere (too many coincidences ...).
This is a great shot with the wings outstretched. The colours are stunning. She looks ready to take off.
Some of the body is OE, and I would have preferred more focus around the head and bill area.
Thanks for posting.

What a beautiful pose! However did you get this bird to do this for you? Very nice coloring and the lighting and focus are perfect, well done.

Hola Tabatha
¡Qué bonita imagen la de esta espátula! Al captarla con las alas abiertas has logrado un resultado espectacular. Very sharp and nice composition. I like it very much. TFS.
Best wishes
Maite
I've always wanted to see one of these up close, perfect timing and composition.
