Fragrant Water Lily
Nymphaea ordorata
Fragrant waterlilies are one of the most recognized of all aquatic plants. The white ( sometimes pink ) fragrant flower measures up to 25 cm across and have yellow centers surrounded by 25 or more petals. The stalk from the flower forms a spiral and draws it's fruit below the water. The fruit capsule 1-2 cm in diameter contains many seeds ( 2-3 mm long ).
Along with their beauty, the lily can propose problems for shallow lakes by totally covering the surface of the lake. Unmanaged, waterlilies will restrict lake - front access and eliminate swimming opportunities.
The waterlily is considered the second nuisance plant after the Eursain watermilfoil. It is a premeir plant for cultivation in containers and ornamental ponds.
Nymphaea is native to the eastern half of North America , including southern Canada.
Beaver, moose, muskrat, porcupine and deer eat waterlily leaves and roots and waterfowl eat the seeds. They provide excellent cover for largemouth bass, sunfish and frogs.
It is believed that the fragrant waterlily was introduced into Washington during the Alaska Pacific Yukon Expostition held in Seattle in the late 1800s.
The flowers appear fron June to September. Each blossom opens in the morning and closes at night.
These beautiful waterlilies can be controled by Westerdahl and Getsinger, this is the recommended herbicide.
I found this beatiful flower in a small ordemental pond on an old plantation off of river road in south Louisiana. I hope you like it. Let me know what you think.
