A side profile view of the Tiger Longwing, photographed in late March at the “Butterflies In the Garden” exhibit at the Fort Worth Botanical Garden.

Tiger Longwing (Heliconius hecale)

This butterfly occurs from Mexico to the Peruvian Amazon.

The longwing butterflies have unusually long lifespans and high fecundity rates, which largely result from their augmented diet. Instead of surviving on food stores from the larval stage or solely sipping flower nectar, adult longwing butterflies are avid pollen eaters. These trait make them eminently suitable for butterfly farming and butterfly gardening. Also, Adult Longwings may live for several months, much longer than most butterflies.

The longwing butterflies are also known as Heliconians. They are brightly colored butterflies with long forewings. Once placed in their own family, they are now considered closely related to the fritillaries. Larvae of most longwings feed on passion vines, and this host plant imparts noxious chemicals to the larvae which are carried over to the adult butterflies. This relationship is identical to the monarch butterflies' reliance on its host plant, milkweed, for defense. Predators find these chemicals distasteful and avoid eating the butterflies.

This butterfly emits a pungent odor from glands at the tip of the abdomen when disturbed.

Once more fantastic by subject and quality shot. Inclined composition is amazing as well as wonderful rich colour palette, great lighting and superb details/sharpness of the butterfly and plant image. Smooth and beautifully coloured BG is terrific. My best wishes. Perfect job.

Hi Ken,
Wonderful profile shot of this gorgeous Tiger Longwing. I am always amazed at the size, form and length of their wings. Lovely colours and sharpness and a percise DOF. The natural sunlight gives perfect illumination. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

Hello Ken,
a real sharpness displayed here. Very clear image of this butterfly. Well composed with the posture of the insect and the diagonal branch cutting acroos the frame. The BG was also muted to make the shot pleasant and impressive.
