Eastern Pondhawk - (Erythemis simplicicollis)

Other Common Names: Common Pondhawk, Green Jacket

Size: 36-48 mm.

Identification: Females and young males are green with square blackish spots on the abdomen.
Males become pruinose blue with white claspers and a green face.

Range: Eastern North America, the Great Plains (excluding the Northernmost part), south to Texas, and spotty distribution in Arizona and New Mexico.

Habitat: Primarily ponds. Mostly quiet waters…including slightly brackish waters but not bogs. Usually associated with mats of algae, duckweed, water lilies, or other flat, floating plants. Adults often perch on the ground, and are quite unwary.

Season: Among the first and last dragonflies of the season in a given area.

Food: Adults feed on other flying insects. They commonly take prey as large as themselves. Often seen eating other dragonflies, butterflies, or damselflies.

Hi Ken,
Wonderful shots of these male and female Eastern Pondhawk with distinct colour difference. Very neat and sharp images with lovely colours and details. Great lighting and exposure handling and you have captured them in fine poses. Excellent POVs and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Excellent shot of these beautiful dragonflies.
Very sharp and detailed images. I viewed your gallery and you have some great photos of insects and butterflies. Great work!! TFS.
I hope to post a dragonfly photo tomorrow but am not 100% sure of it's identity. Maybe you can let me know what type you think it is.

Hallo Ken
A remarkable image showing both the male and female of the same insect. It is great to have the two side by side comparing the different features, observing the differences and appreciating each for their individual specialities. Normally the male is the better looking in the animal world, but here I tend to like the female more. The colours are bright and the details are clear and well seen. If I would have come across these two at the same time, I would have thought I have come across two different kinds of insects. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ken,

Nice presentation of these Pondhawks. I'm still waiting to get my first dragonfly of the season = I'm hoping it'll happen this weekend. I think that both pictures are equally good, with nice light and colours and strong compositions.
