Hot Lips Sage (Salvia microphylla) is the red & white flower.
Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) is the hummer.

Here's some info on Hot Lips Sage:

'Hot Lips' was found near the Chiapas area of Mexico and was introduced by Richard Turner of the Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco, California. This is a unique bi-color salvia that has red tips and white lips. In the hotter months of summer it may have all red and all white flowers on the same plant due to warmer night temperatures, but when the night temperature drops in the fall the flowers will return to their bi-color state. This Salvia has a similar look to Salvia greggii except it has a finer texture and smaller leaf. Hot Lips Sage seems not to have some of the leaf spot and defoliation problems that you can get with the greggii’s during high humidity situations, great for use in borders and beds. Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips' can reach 30" tall and spread up to 6' at maturity.

Hardiness: USDA Zones 7- 9a
Plant Use: Flowering Perennial
Exposure: Full Sun
Water Requirements: Low

Hi Howard,
I'm glad you used the name of the plant for your title as I had been wondering what it was.
We had it outside our kitchen window up at Pirongia, and on warm spring evenings it was smothered in bright metallic winged Burnished Brass Moths. I wish I knew then what I know now about photography, because they were tres cool and we don't get them this far south.
Anyway .... Your hummingbird is tres cool too.
Nicely sharp where it counts and well composed.
TFS

Hi Howard,

Guess she's hanging around at your house now - I haven't seen her around here lately. Another gorgeous shot of this Black-chinned amongst the lovely flowers. Frozen perfectly in a beautiful setting.

Jane

Thanks for showing Hot Lips too, though I find myself glued to the hovering bird you have captured in this amazing shot, Howard.
The focus on the eye in unbelievable in this masterly capture.

Hi Howard

Great shot - wonderful pose with great luminosity. Excellent timing and framing.

There is another (Madagascan) red sage which is grown as an expensive(very) annual here. In Madagascar in grows like a weed!

Hi Howard,

Nice picture,In fact the "Hot Lips" adds colour and charm to the picture.I would have preffered positon of the bird little lower, though its situational.

Stunning! The freeze action is incredible. Amazing light, colors and details. I love the vivid colors in this shot!

Hi Howard,
another interesting image from you, well excecuted, though I would like a little more space on top of the bird which is too near to the top edge. no doubt the flowers, even the blurred ones, are adding to the image againt the pastel blue as background. a vertical shot would have been more enjoyable and ofcourse it depends on the situation you were in. TFS.

Beautiful capture Howard,
The colours are gorgeous in this shot! You've managed to freeze her at just the right angle to where her wings seem to be much shorter then they really are.
Very sharp image, I like the way the feet dangle with those teeny tiny claws. Well done!!

Hi Howard

Sorry for being a bit late...i was on a long hike yesterday and i was quite tired :)

This shot is a great reminder for me actually. I distinctively recall my first days here on TN when i was simply amazed by your humming bird shots and i chose one of them for my favorites. The great part about it is that here i am, after a bit over 2 years (just realized that i was i typing) and i'm still charmed by these captures of yours :)

Splendid work here, needless to say, with exceptional sharpness and light.
I love the way you managed the exposure and flash here (thanks for sharing that info, too) and the idea for a blue BG is also terrific!
Top job, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Howard,
The title mislead me a bit...::)
I kept looking at that super-plucky beak...splendid shot of this bird with a perfect in-flight capture. The catchlight is just wonderful and the blurred wings well indicates the in motion action.I see that the rest of the bird is quite sharpely picked up and the glisten on the lower part of its body is easily noticeable.I wonder how low you had to go to get this shot.I really love the PoV you have here and the blue Sky of course.Even the way you have the hot lips tapering off from one corner to the other looks wonderful.

TFS & Cheers

Hi Howard
You did good work by capturing this little guy in the air with excellent quality.

Fantastic composition, Howard!
The hover hummingbird well position near the top of frame, showed his dynamics up and down hovering.
Meanwhile, you composed the Hot Lips showed her feminine side, seemed she was facing and welcoming the bird.
You are a good scene-director, Howard!

Best wishes, TFS,
Bima

Salut Howard
Un autre petit bijou, des couleurs éclatantes et des détails merveilleux.
Bravo et au revoir...JP

Hi Howard,
Really fantastic image, MF. Crystal clear sharpness where it counts, and the colors, especially the light blue of the sky is wonderful. I didn't know this flower specie before, they don't live here, not even as cultivated plants either. Bombastic composition, top notch photo, informative note. Bravo.

wow! wow! wow!!

amazing capture .....

Hello Howard,
there is such a pleasant lightness, fragility and transparency in this masterly photograph - showing all the merits of perfectly handled water colours. I love the clear blossoms emerging out of the softness, and I love that air dancer's seemingly effortless freezing in motion. A very creative great picture, once more from you!
With thanks, and my best regards,
Peter

Howard, I am stunned, this is the most fantastic hummingbird picture I ever seen! It is BEAUTIFUL, I love the colours, the blue background is amazing, with the red flowers and the amazing little bird. Those flowers are gorgeous. This is a beauty! I tried to put this picture on my desktop background but it doesn't have enough resolution ;-( it is too small a file. Yet, I come back once in a while to look at it. This is the most 1950's picture I have ever seen ;-) Thank you HOward, your talent is great,

Francine
