Independence Day is more than a chance for family and friends throughout the country to gather for barbecues and fireworks displays, it is an annual celebration to commemorate the courage and faith of our founding fathers in their pursuit of liberty.

Independence Day in the U.S., is an annual holiday commemorating the formal adoption by the Continental Congress of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia. Although the signing of the Declaration was not completed until August, the Fourth of July holiday has been accepted as the official anniversary of U.S. independence and is celebrated in all states and territories of the U.S.

The holiday was first observed in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, at which time the Declaration of Independence was read aloud, city bells rang, and bands played. It was not declared a legal holiday, however, until 1941.

A bit of trivia for you who read posted notes.
I was raised by my grandparents Howard & Emma Matlack until age 12. As a child they told me that I was directly related to Timothy Matlack through Howard my grandfather..Timothy Matlack was employed by the founding fathers to pen the actual Delaration of Independence document.

Original cropped horizontally only to 3240x2592.
Late in the day around 6:00pm and cloudy.
I was very close :)

Thanx for looking & to all my American friends have a "safe & sane" 4th.

WOW! Howard we are both Americans and living together in a two party system which works pretty doggone well..and we find common ground in nature as in this image. Of course this means you can join SAR and all that...I opted out. too....too much for me..I already have enough on my plate...Thanks much for the information...and the nice image. Looks like he just exited the quick bathroom trip some of the Hollywood types do...don't ask:-)

Hola Howard.
Bella foto. Este pequeño Ciervo tiene una mirada muy tierna, y parece posar tranquilo para la fotografia. Parece estar satisfecho con la comida que se le da.
Saludos Howard.

Great shot. The tightly cropped image puts the foucs on the deer's eyes, which look very beautiful. The reflections on the eyes and the expression on its face are beautiful. The sharply focussed eyelashes also add to the beauty. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Howard,
What a fabulous close view of this gorgeous animal with huge and beautful eyes. Good light too that has brought out the lovely colours so well. Excellent work!

Hello Howard,

A magnificent shot. The eyes are beautiful, just the eyes of a woman (-: (hollywood stars)

Well done. Regards and TFS BOB

Hello Howard
This capture is superb...But I will share an opinion (a constructive crit!)
The eyes are spot on sharp as they have to be in this kind of capture..But to me the nose is a little to much out of focus...I see from your shooting info that you were pushing a sharp capture anyway and werent afforded the luxury of another f stop without losing any usable shutter speed.....The ears though are very sharp in comparison to the nose so possibly by taking a focus point lower down the bridge of the nose you would have kept the eyes spot on and shared the available dof between the nose and the ears?
Just an idea!
Best Regards
Paul

Howard, it seems the animals you capture have a lot of character, there is always a moment captured or something special about it. This one is among the nicest one, what a glance, how could someone be indifferent to such a look. The eyes are beautiful, big dark eyes with long lashes and something is being said in it. There are no words to translate it but it sure is a beautiful animal. Thank you for taking the time to take those pictures, they are just amazing.

pts tomorrow

Dear Howard,
having spent 4th of July hiking along a Slovenian mountain river called Soca (Isonzo in Italian), I came to see a man at the river bank who looked like Ernest Hemingway. He was an American celebrating the day by silently fishing trout from Isonzo river's marvellous emerald waters. So, just returned from my trips I am coming a bit late to celebrate Independance Day here on TN with you.
I enjoyed reading your story. Good to read some historical data among all your natural history talks and photographic details. Must feel good to be in such a close family relationship to one of the men who set up the Declaration of Independence.
Great title on a probably rather noisy day for presenting a vulnerable creature's touchingly beautiful eyes in wonderful expression.
With thanks, and all my best wishes,
Peter
