Leafhopper, any of more than 10,000 species of brightly colored leaping insects, found worldwide. Leafhoppers range in length from 2 to 25 mm (0.06 to 1 in) and have piercing, sucking mouthparts for feeding on the juices of vegetation. In doing so, they may also transmit viral and fungal diseases from plant to plant and can cause extensive damage to shrubs, field crops, and fruit trees. A sweet liquid called honeydew-composed of unused sap and other excretions-that they exude from their anus is eaten by ants and other insects. Leafhoppers lay eggs in leaves and stems. Among the 700 species found in the United States are the grape, potato, lateral, and banded leafhoppers.
Scientific classification: Leafhoppers belong to the suborder Homoptera. They constitute the family Cicadellidae (formerly Jassidae).

I used a 36mm Ext ring to fill the frame here.

Hi Howard!

I have never seen a hopper like this one. It's always to realize how various our nature is. You present it with great sharpness and wonderful natural colours. The patterns of the insect are looking like a leaf, if you scroll the picture and hide the head it could be one! Your notes are interesting and instructive, too!

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Howard

I was actually looking forward to congratulate you on your good dragonfly larvae macro shot, when i saw that it has been removed... :(

Anyway, this macro here sure compensates and brings just as much pleasure to my eyes :)
What an extraordinary animal! I've some, but i think this one is definitely one of the most interesting and definitely very photogenic.
The texture on its body is absolutely amazing and you managed to capture it superbly! The vivid color is also gorgeous and stands out well from this scene.
Add to that a terrific focus and sharpness and you've got a typical Howie macro :) Impeccable!

BRAVO and TFS
Horia

This is the second shot of a leafhopper, I'm seeing in the past two days! Before that, I'd never even heard of them, Howard! And just look at it, it looks like it's shape and colour are a natural camouflage! It looks like a leaf, itself!
Cheers!

Hi Howard.
I have met this insect only once and I managed to take only one shot (not bad but and not excellent). You have used your chance excellently and you managed to create a true masterpiece. Terrific macro shot, tremendous exposure parameters and technique of shooting. Fill flash, details, colours are superb. Bravo.

What a great macro!
Excellent detail.
Very good sharpness.
Superb composition.
How big was this fellow?
I've been thinking of getting some extension tubes but am very tight for money right now so will probably just get one, the 36mm ring or example... which one would you recommend?

Cheers!

not bad at all, the idea with the telelens, tripod, the extension tube and subdued daylight. The result speaks for itself.

Wow! What a fantastic macro in green you have here Howard!I have seen this very teeny weeny creatures in a plant in our compound. I did try quiet a few shots, but they were so tiny i just couldnt manage a decent shot to share in TN.

This one that you have share with us is a superb capture showing every little detail of the beauty and with excellent colour and contrasts. The image has been composed with a very fine sharpness and clarity. The texture of the little hopper is very clearly visible and one is able to appreciate the beauty of the capture in every way.

The lighting is just perfect. The composition with the parts of OOF flower petals and colourful green and streaked stem forming a laterally inverted "L" looks quiet interesting and adds on to the composition excellently.

Very well done.
TFS & Cheers

Beautiful picture, super composition, well done once again howard!

Hello Howard. This is one excellent framing in tall frame. Beautiful sharp copy with beautiful exposure and detail. Stunning perch captured well against the spotless blue sky. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni

What an amazing creature! Its shape is simply great! :)
I know some similar species from this group but this looks rather huge (what was the size???).
Very nice macro Howard!
