Zebra Heliconian
Heliconius charithonia

Family: Brush-footed Butterflies (Nymphalidae)

Subfamily: Longwings (Heliconiinae)

Identification: Wings long and narrow; black with narrow yellow stripes.

Life history: Males patrol for females, and are also attracted to female chrysalids. A male will wait on the chrysalis and mate with the female as she is about to emerge. He then deposits on her abdomen a chemical than repels other males. Eggs are laid in groups of 5-15 on leaf buds or leaves of the host plant; caterpillars feed at night on leaves. Adults roost communally in groups of 25-30 individuals.

Flight: All year in South Texas and southern Florida, wanders north during warmer months.

Wing span: 2 3/4 - 4 inches (7 - 10.1 cm).

Caterpillar hosts: Passion-vines including Passiflora suberosa, P. lutea, and P. affinis.

Adult food: Flower nectar and pollen, which are gathered on a set foraging route or "trap-line". Favorite plants include lantana and shepherd's needle.

Habitat: Tropical hammocks, moist forests, edges, fields.

Range: South America north through Central America, West Indies, and Mexico to South Texas and peninsular Florida. Occasional immigrant north to New Mexico, Nebraska, and South Carolina.

Conservation: Not usually required, but habitat for permanent populations is limited in South Texas.

NatureServe Global Status: G5 - Demonstrably secure globally, though it may be quite rare in parts of its range, especially at the periphery.

Management needs: Maintain habitat and host plant colonies.

Hi Angelina,
Glorious shot of this beautiful butterfly. Very sharp details and fine focus. Set against the green habitat it looks so beautiful and i like the colour contrasts here. The red flowers give a fine touch of colour. Excellent POV and a superb composition. Kudos.

Man Angy I could sharpen the picture on my TV with that shot. I wish they were big enough to click on so it would make a full screen background for the monitor without stretching it. Very sharp focus. Well noted as per your usual!

Very good shot of this Butterfly, Vary sharp and good detail. You do very well with butterflies (and every thing els). I was in the Colombia river gorge to day and came across several. And fond out how hard it is to photograph these little guys they don't like to sit still for very long. I had a Vary tuff time, (do you hypnotize them or some thing) Agene GREAT JOB!!

Wow, what a wonderful butterfly ! And I love everything in this picture ! The setails, the vivid colors, the beautiful composition, the POV, the pose of the butterfly, with the wings wide open... I also like the shape and the markings on the butterfly's wings, it is a gorgeous specimen. Very well done !

Excellent shot, in colour, sharpness POV and DOF! TFS.
But I think that composition is not so well-balanced. I cropped it a bit on top and right and like it more. (Unfortunately I have reached the limit of 2 WS photos for this day.)

Hello Angelina,

Wow! You have such a beauty in Texas!!! Wonderful composition of a splendid butterfly (the damaged wing doesn't bother me at all). Excellent exposition (not easy black and ivory)...!!! The only thing is that you put maybe a little bit too much sharpening (look at the white line around the antennas).
