My poor little spicebush lost a lot of wing parts in what must have been a very busy little life.

Spicebush Swallowtail
Papilio troilus

A grand and beautiful butterfly, the Spicebush Swallowtail takes nectar from Joe-Pye weed, jewelweed, and honeysuckle. Like black female Tigers, it mimics the Pipevine Swallowtail.

description 3 1/2-4 1/2" (89-114 mm). Both sexes black-brown above with cream-white to cream-yellow spots around FW outer margin; HW above black at base, with 1 bright orange spot on costa, 1 on trailing edge. Male HW above is broadly clouded with diffuse but brilliant blue-green (rarely blue) between spots. Series of sharply defined, pale blue-green lunules runs around outer curve of wing. Female bluer above than male; HW has broad cloud of dark green and blue scales and lime-green lunules. Below, HW of both sexes has 2 curved rows of bright orange-red spots (1 around margin; 1 parallel but midwing), enclosing area heavily spotted with blue. 1 rounded black tail on HW.

Poor thing...Life has been rough but it came to the right person...Most the lantana blooms here are gone...I didn't think it attracted butterflies...Excellent POV and natural color...TFS

Hi Angelina,
Excellent capture of this butterfly!
I like your close approach and all the details got on its wings, even the damage on he left one.
It's so good the contrast made by the red flowers near by, that contribute to make this a lovely composition.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Good one, Angy! It's astonishing how they manage, despite these injuries. Good shot - it really seems to be an "elderly" Bfly - since the colors, that in young ones is a dazzling blue, has faded to gray! Good capture! Cheers, Klaus

Hi angelina,
nice butterfly shot with lovely colours, superb pov and composition.
well done
TFS.

Hello Angelina !
This is such a beautiful butterfly ! You were lucky to find such a beautiful species. I like the vivid colors, the composition, the POV and the pose of the butterfly. The red flowers add a ice touch of color. Just a pity that some parts of the wings are out of focus, but I know how difficult it can be to get the whole wings in focus... Anyway, it remains a great picture. Very well done !
Valerie.

Hi Angelina,
Your visit to the butterfly park has given you fabulous opportunities and you have done well to capture these beauties. Very sharp image and lovely colour tones and patterns on the wings. I observe that you have used f/4.5 in all your shots, you should have tried f/5.6 and seen whether you get the full wings in focus. Give it a try the next time. Anyway, this is a majestic one and I am seeing it for the first time. Excellent POV to capture it among the greens and the lantanas. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

Hello Angelina,
Oppps, bad damage to the wing(s)..!
Obviously they can manage even with severe damage...
Well composed image with good details, and the red flowefrs offer welcome colour contrast!
Greetings,
Pablo -

You do have quite the acreage to crawl around in. These fairies do not suspect you are there until you have grabbed the mug shot, then they escape.

Very much appreciated and well noted...

Hi Angelina,
A beautiful swallowtail butterfly. No matter if the wing is broken. It is not on your hand to do anything. The capture is excellent showing nature at its originality.

I love the angle of this Angy. You have the right amount of flowers in it for perfect compo. Nice work. Natures painters sure does wonders with butterflies. You think this wing is chewed up. I have one here on PC that is almost half gone.Anyways...thanks for sharing these

Wow, I am getting behind! How did that happen? This is nice butterfly shot from a very good angle in a very pretty natural setting with the lantana.
I don't know your lens, but I agree with Mana that if you try f5.6 you will likely get a larger focus area and possibly a little more detail. (But the slight blur on right wing may be due to movement of butterfly). I have also found that I get more detail if I do not use the full focal length of my lens (but I do not know if that would be true with yours).
