The Queen (Danaus gilippus)
She looks a lot like a Monarch but there are subtle differences. The following is an article about Butterfly Camouflage from http://www.thefieldmuseum.org

You may not see butterflies on overcast days, but they’re there. With their wings closed, many butterflies hide their bright colors and blend in with their surroundings.

Some butterflies and moths, including the buckeye and owl butterflies and the io and polyphemus moths, have large eye spots that make them look like scary animals and frighten predators away.

Bright warning coloration and mimicry occur in many groups of butterflies. The monarch caterpillar feeds on milkweed, which makes the adult butterfly bitter and poisonous to birds. Birds learn quickly to avoid its bright orange and black pattern. The viceroy (and the Queen)butterfly, on the other hand, is better tasting, but still unpleasent. Because its orange color and black stripes are like the colors of the monarch, birds learn to avoid both at once -- butterflies of both species and the birds benefit!

Pat

Beautiful - sharp and crisp with great colors! Good pose in the light! Cheers, Klaus

Hello Angelina.

Excellent picture, nice composition and colors.
Great composition.

Regards.
Jose Luis.

There is a happening here...where your picture is both sharp, yet not so sharp as to throw it into a science as some tend to do. You keep the softer parts while having sharper parts very visible, yet pleasing.

Another one of your exquisite butterfly shots. The 'Queen' looks beautiful among the greens and the back lighting makes it look even more prettier. Excellent POV to capture this classical pose with the proboscis ready for action. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Dear Angelina,
Great composition. Details are fine tuned. EXCELLENT notes, as always.
Love the quality of the CLARITY.
Best regards,
Mario.
P.S.Have still not seen the "postcard". Hope its here soon.

Nice sharp colorful image. Well composed and accomplished as usual!

Poisonous creatures all wearing their warning colors has always amazed me. Orange seems to be the standard color. Who agreed upon that? Mimicry is amazing as well. This creature combines both.

a great shot of this beautiful butterfly.
Very sharp and detailed.
Excellent quality.
Well done,
Joe

Amazing detail. Absoluting stunning! I love the contrast, the exposure, and composition. I feel as if I can reach out and touch this butterfly. The dof is perfect - a soft green that highlights the subject. Excellent job!
