Another Gulf Fritillary, still from my trip on the 19th of July. I definitely need to take some new photos. I realize this one isn't great. I used f 4.5 on most of the photos that day, thinking it would give me more light. It did but I lost a lot of depth. I'm learning. I didn't even know what the f-stop did when I joined this...and even when I bought this camera a few months ago. Thanks to you guys, I'm learning.

Ancient Mexicans considered the butterfly important enough to dedicate an entire palace to it at Teotihuacan, just outside Mexico City. This palace is called the Palace of the Mariposa.

Teotihuacan is the oldest metropolis in Meso-America, and is the only one to possess a continuous history, from the archaic through to the purely classical period.

Historians do not agree on who the founders of Teotihuacan were; some say the Olmecs, others the Toltecs, but most agree that it was at one time the capital of a highly civilized culture later conquered by the Aztecs, the foremost of the Nahuatal Tribes.

The butterfly represents flame in the symbolism of this culture. Often pictured with the signs for water, it becomes clear that the "vision of Earth as a paradise is based on the dynamic harmony between water and fire." The same concept is exemplified by an image of Tlaloc, god of rain, pictured on a vase bearing a butterfly motif. It is interesting to note that the butterfly is used as symbolic representatives of both the fire and rain god.

Finding no information as to why butterflies symbolize flames indians might have observed the many butterflies whose wings are red, orange, yellow, or combinations of all three colors. A cloud or "cumulep" of fire-colored butterflies taking off from a mud puddle after drinking, could easily be interpreted as being flame-like.

Mexican Indians might also have witnessed a "magna-cumulep" of millions of orange, monarch butterflies migrating to their over-wintering grounds in the mountains near Mexico City. A "cloud of flame" would definitely have entered their minds. The flapping of the wings would even approximate the flickering of the tongues of flame. The moth has also come to be associated with flames, althought not as asymbol of fire.

Hi Angelina,
A beautiful butterfly again with such bright colours and sharp focus on the eyes. I like the way its proboscis is positioned and the gorgeous eyes. Among the greens the lantana and the butterfly stand out and the colour contrasts looks majestic. The POV is unsual but looks great, definitely a different perspective and a fabulous angle. Wonderful composition. Kudos.

Hi Angy,

Beautiful and different once again! I love the position of the butterfly - so graceful looking. The greens and oranges are magnificent. It chose the right flower. Wonderful details and a beautiful composition.

Jane

Hi Angelina
Beautiful POV and nice shot.
The green BG is also beautiful and your main theme earns points
Useful note too
TFS and see you

Hello Angelina !
I love this intense orange color, both on butterfly and on flower, it makes such a beautiful contrast with the green BG. Your compostion and POV are wonderful, excellent DOF with nice focus on the butterfly's head. I love his rolled tongue and the markings on his wings. he's a beauty, just like your picture. vry well done !
Valerie.

Hi Angelina,
fine picture with finr details and sharpness on the head,
the DOF is a bit shallow as you mention.
The colours are amazing and the compostion very nice.
Well done.

I think it looks great just as it is. What would more DOF have bought you? Maybe the leaf would have gotten into focus and become a distraction. The wing is a little ragged, but "ya has ta take like ya sees em" to paraphrase Pop Eye. :-)

Well done,
Reid

Hello Angy,
Still looks great with the f4.5!
good sharp and details too
thanks for sharing
cheers
Tony

It's a great pose and excellent focus on the head and eye. I like that we can see the curled up proboscis so well.

Looking at your EXIF data, you could have dropped your shutter speed down to say 1/400 and thus add some DOF with your aperture by 1 F-stop. Lately I've been delving in setting my camera on aperture priority in order to maintain the DOF that I want. The camera then figures the other settings out around my aperture choice.
You did well though in setting your sharpest focus on the butterfly's head. Great colour!

Hi Angelina,
Lovely colours and an interesting POV. Great detail, shapeness and DOF. you have a very nice photo here.
regards
Matt.

Fabulous colours and good details in the foreground wing. A bit tricky work with the shallow dog, but nonetheless a good job

Hi Angelina,
Another beautifully composed shot of this orange beauty. Excellent POV, details and colors. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Angy,
you know everything about your photo, but I would wish to add that this POV - opened wings in such a flat way - is not easy to capture. Colors are wonderful as ever, and your note very interesting.
Waiting for your next,
Ciao,
Violetta

Good POV and colors - so I think you did quite well! :) Excellent notes, too! Bravo, Angy!
