Painted Bunting male (passerina ciris).

Here you see this male "testing" the water, looking for a place to land. He is basically hovering in place.
I was lucky the first day they arrived. The sun broke through in the afternoon for a bit and they didn't know their way around yet.

THERE IS A SHOT OF THE POND, TAKEN THIS MORNING THROUGH MY FRONT WINDOW.

This is the area I do alot of birding from, the light is always good. Our house is a rectangle going East/West, so the suns direction is good a large part of the day.

One of the most strikingly patterned of all North American birds, the male painted bunting, with its blue head, red underparts, and yellow-green back more than lives up to its old name of Äúnonpareil,Äů, the unequaled one. Even the female, in shades of yellow and green, is unlike any other North American bunting. Like the other buntings, it favors hedgerows, thickets, and clearings with brushy area in the breeding season, generally staying low and keeping hidden. The song is a sweet warble with the pattern of a blue grosbeak, but the tone of an indigo or lazuli bunting without the paired phrases. It breeds in the Southeast along the Atlantic coast and in the southern great Plains south to northern Mexico. In the Southeast, the population has been declining sharply in recent decades and there is concern about its survival in this part of the range. Part of the Southeast population winters in Florida, where the birds are regular feeder visitors.

Hello Howard,

Wow! What a great action shot!
This bird is new to me but she is certainly not going to find it easy to hide!
I love the way she is spreading her feet and her wings, like an aeroplane coming in to land! Lovely details all round.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Howard, superb action shot of this beauty. TFS. Regards,

Hi Howard,

Reminds me of going to the beach on the east coast, sticking my toe in the water to find it absolutely freezing! Great shot with the beak wide open - I have a feeling I know what she is saying. Beautiful colors - they look vivid to me. Wonderful details of the face (great expression)and plummage and a marvelous pose.

Hola Howard.
Bella foto de este singular y colorido Pajarillo. La pose congelada en el aire le da mas valor a la presentacion. La nota muy interesante de leer.
Saludos Howard.

Hello Howard,
A striking bird, caught in-flight in a striking manner!
The high technical quality is off-set by the fine timing and composition against the swirling pattern of the water to creat a great contrast and effect and the composition is just right.
Great work, Howard and thanks for sharing it!

BTW, is this your new pond?

Howard, you would like Australia, with the Lorikeets; this lady reminds me of them. I like the stopped action in this shot, and the expression (can birds have expressions?). It looks like she has the brakes put on, but you were shooting at 1/3000 (wow) so you probably just stopped her in mid flap. The colour seen here and the detail seen on the bird is excellent. Very nice. I like your setup, you have the perfect blind.

Thanks, John

Hi Howard,
This is this colorful creature again! What a beauty! This is an excellent action shot that you achieved well with those difficult settings (this camera is a must!) and the photographer is gifted of course... I should built a pound here as well ;) It seems to work very well with those amazing species it attires... One question remains: did you use a noise reduction device somehow? Thanks,

Howard - thankyou for your email and I would appreciate any comments you can make - my intention is to get better at what I really enjoy - first stop I think is to do better with what I have then later I want to invest in a faster lens like a 2.8 80-200 lens rather than the 18-200 3.5 - 5.6 i have now.
enough about me - this photo is crystal clear and well composed - congrats

Hi Howard.
I have missed this charming picture and WS series. I hope this is your pond. Near the house. It looks so nicely. And birds give it high estimation. It is a key thing. Wonderful in-flight shot in every aspect. Especially I like vibrant clear colours of the picture. Bravo.

Hi Howard

I can see we are in for a wonderful journey with this new pond of yours. Actually I am rather envious to think that you can sit in the comfort of your front room and get to pick and choose which, when, and how much photos to shoot. Oh, the joys of the comfortable life (chuckle). Anyway, it seems like this male was quite vocal when he visited your pond for the first time. A beautiful coloured bird and you made full use of of the available light and your enhanced ISO setting to get a marvelous shot.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
