Just shot this one an hour ago. The goal was to get an insect capture to show our gladiolus that are budding right now..Mission accomplished :)

YOU CAN SEE A WIDE ANGLE VERTICAL FRAME OF WHERE THIS WAS SHOT THIS MORNING, IN THE ATTACHED WORKSHOP.

Question mark butterflies (Polygonia interrogationis) get their name from their wings. The forewings of question mark butterflies are hooked. The upperside of the 2.25 -3 inch wings are red-orange with black spots. The color of the top of the hindwing changes depending on the time of year. In the summer, it is mostly black with a short tail, the winter form has a lot of orange and a longer, violet-tipped tail. The underside is light brown; the hindwings have a pearly-white question mark in the center, giving the butterfly its name.

Hello Howard,
Interesting pose and POV in this composition that make the Question Mark butterfly almost look part of the budding Gladiolus and you have succeeded in showing both with excellent sharpness and colours. I find that the use of flash in daytime can lead to a 'nightime effect', but on the otherhand butterflies can rest like this with the wings closed at nightime. :)
Thanks for showing this beauty,
Ivan

hello Howard

excellent macro shot of this butterflie, with fine POV, DOF
and framing, i love the excellent density of the colours,
great contrast, sharpness and details, if you hide his face
you can say that his wings have the same colours and shapes
as the autumn dead leafs, here is a little bit darker, TFS

I was in the middle of a fine critique of this image when a bad news phone call came in...and hence my day was interrupted along with my words which sounded good at the time...but I have totally forgotten,. I do know this image struck me this morning with great interest....and it still does and is worthy of so much more than just two cents....but alas I must now get back to my other duties...Be Well Howard!

Hi Howard,
The detail you manage to capture in your pictures always fascinates me! I've stayed up a little late tonight and took the luxury to visit here. Maybe someday I'll find a little more time to indulge. Good to see your consistency. I miss our buddy Scott. I hope he is doing okay.

Best regards my friend!

The red Gladiolus is really lovely and what a bonus to get this beautiful butterfly resting on it too! Lovely sharp details of its wing pattern and beautiful colours. It does look slightly damaged though, the poor thing.
