[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I've pulled this Mexican Rattler (Crotalus basiliscus) out of the archives from 3 years ago, something different. Shot through glass with tungsten light at the Cameron Park Zoo reptile exhibit.

This is one of the largest rattlesnake species. Specimens exceeding 150 cm are not uncommon, while the maximum size reported is 204.5 cm. The body is moderately stout and rather rectangular in cross section.

Midbody there are 25-29 rows of strongly keeled dorsal scales. The ventral scales number 174-206 and the subcaudals 18-36.

The color pattern consists of brown or grayish ground color overlaid with 26-41 dark, rhomb-shaped (diamond) blotches with light edges. The head is a uniform grayish brown except for its lighter labial scales and dark postorbital bar. There is no distinct pattern on the crown or neck areas. The tail may be gray, with darker bands, or almost uniform in color without any distinct markings. The belly is white or cream colored. The young are mostly red, but adults eventually become an olive green. Within its range, this is the only rattlesnake that has diamond-shaped dorsal markings.

This species often occurs in the same areas as C. molossus and in these places the two appear to hybridize freely. While these two species are easily distinguished, identifying the hybrid specimens is problematic.

Hi Howard

I particularly like the way you have filled the whole frame with the snake. The sinous form is well shown and adds dynamism to the shot. The scles add a mesmeric quality. Excellent work - as usual.

James

Hi Howard,

I was going to ask how you got so close to a Rattler but then read it was an exhibit. Whew! Fantastic close-up with amazing details of his face and skin. What a pose - seems to be staring right into the camera. Beautiful colors and shading. I love the way he fills the frame.

Howard,

I love how you worded the note "I've pulled this Mexican Rattler from ..." and I'm thinking ... your basement ? You had me going for a second :)
This is an awesome image. I am sure it would make for a great wallpaper provided you're not afraid of snakes. You've composed this one wonderfully. Colors and detail are top notch. Great work. TFS.

Hi Howard

Great capture of the Rattler.
I like your composition with the Snake filling the whole frame.
Very good details and lovely warm colour tones.

This is simply a wonderful shot, Howard...
You've got this sharp eye for detail...
I apologise for having disappeared so suddenly over the weekend!

Hi Howard,
Fantastic shot, I really like the minimalistic composition with only the snake (not even fully), but nothing else at all. Perfect color tones and sharpness, too. Very effective pic, at least I'm effected. :) But I have really no idea what to do when facing this specie while photographing fungi. :)
Congrats for this gorgeous photo, I like it a lot.
Best regards from Hungary, Central Europe, László

Ciao Howard,
TFS. Have a nice weekend.
