[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I came across this box turtle at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Virginia. Turtles rock!!! He was sitting in the grass, so I knew a shot of the entire turtle wouldn't be very interesting. I decided to try to get an extreme close-up with my macro lens. I laid down on my belly so I was face-to-face with the little guy. Actually, initially I was face-to-shell, because he was too spooked to come out of his shell. I figured if I laid there long enough, he'd get comfortable with my presence and come out. I picked some of the blades of grass that were in front of shell, so they wouldn't get in the way, and then I waited and waited. He finally stuck his head out and I got this shot. When I first reviewed the image, I wasn't sure what I thought about only the eyes being in focus, and his nose/beak (what do you call it on a turtle???) being totally out of focus, but now I like it. I think it gives the viewer the feel of just how close I got to this little guy's face with my lens. Turtles definitely rock!!! :)

Excellent shot Stephen, and I think you did exactly the right thing by keeping the eyes in focus. I also use the 100 USM lens and it's awesome when you capture a shot like this.

Nice image, I also use the same lens and love it. I think keeping the eyes in focus was the smart thing to do.
We have these turtles living in the southern part of Ohio, so I only see them when I go south for the day.
