Painted Bunting (female).

I was incorrect in prior postings with respect to identification of the female..
So I thought I'd better post this one.

I had mistakenly believed the female was similar, with duller colors than the male.

Anyway, here she be :)

You can see a still of the male and information specific to Passerina ciris HERE
And the male inflight HERE

I have serious satellite internet drag and interruptions at this time with the bad weather here. I will get back to you ASAP.

Thanx for lookin'

Hello Howard,
Yes, I wondered about that, but was too lazy to look it up so I'm glad you have posted this fine capture of the female Painted Bunting. The pose, POV, lighting and composition are superb, as well as the technical aspects, the shapness allowing her to stand out from the neutral BG.
TFS this fine image,
Ivan

Which network is it that calls their waiting room, "The Green Room". Supposedly because it is calming...interesting theory....but your overall green theme here works very well...Various tones of same complimenting each other thus enhancing your bird! Tres' cool Howard. You are in His Grace!

Hi Howard,
I stopped in to use the babel translator and saw this magnificent shot. I've been rather too busy, but decided to take a moment to say I thought it was so.
I really like how you handled the DOF here making the bird standout with superb clarity against the soft clump of leaves.
Kind regards my friend,
Dave

Hi Howard,

She is beautiful - even without the wonderful colors of the male. I still don't understand why the males get all the bright colors. I love her pose - she is so sweet looking. Nice natural colors and sharp details in a lovely setting with a perfect background.

Hey Howard!
A fine capture of this not-so-stunningly-coloured-as-the-male-but-still-pretty female Painted Bunting!
I like the soft tones and colours.
Perfect DOF that has blurred the BG very well.
Sharp as ever with excellent clarity.
Great composition too.
Well done!

Joe

Hi again, Howard
it's not because the female Painted bunting is much less colourful than the male that this picture is of less interest. The light is from the side which doies the many shades of green some good. The picture reminds us all how sexual selection can bring about strange dimorphisms. I'm working on the mating system of the palaearctic Reed bunting where the dimorphism is not very marked. We discovered that females select extrapair partners on the basis of the particular dawn song, not colour. Thanks for the wonderful picture.
Best regards
Dietrich

Hi Howard.
Scene at whole is amazing. Y-construction of the twigs with charming bird on it is fine as well as the attractive turn of the bird. Details and sharpness of the bird are fantastic, blurriness of the BG is so wonderful as main subject. Great of quality and subject picture. Bravo.

Hi Howard

So she turned out a little more on the drab side than we thought, but drab (as in pale in this case) doesn't mean unattractive, but maybe just less-spectacular. With her green and yellow coat of colours she still strikes a pretty picture. Thanks for the correction.

The zone of the DOF was spot-on to include only the bird and the twigs next to her in the range of focus and thereby rendering everything else OOF, including the tuft of leaves behind the bird and the rest of the BG. This had the desired effect to enhance the prominence of the little bird within the image. The lack of noise in the BG once again demonstrates that you have mastered the process of high ISO photography with minimal impact from grain or colour speckles. I think it has to do with the high shutter speeds that you muster though. So here you have played the teacher again without necessarily realising it (I think). Thanks Howard for all your support and for being a good friend and a great tutor this past 2 years here on the site.

Well done MF and TFS.

Loot

Hello Howard
An absolutely beautiful capture of the painted bunting.I love the green and brwon tones all around that accentuates your subject's presence. The lighting is superb and is able to get you the catchlight in the beauty's eye.
The blurred BG is amazing and this is an absolutley professional shot with a wonderful PoV.
Very well done.

Hi Howard,
Excellent shot of this cute Painted Bunting and I must say compared to the male the colours on the plumage of the female looks so drab. Anyway a fabulous pose captured and the glint on its eye is so beautiful. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. Kudos.

Hi Howard,

Heck, I dont know what I was thinking at the time when I was helping you id this passerine. I should've know, I also saw that you had labled a male painted bunting as a female, I definitely would've know better. TFS
