I rarely do the dedication thing, but Dr. Bayram Gocmen (Dept of Biology & Zoology) OR better known as "Boreocypriensis", deserves this one without question. He has shared his tireless work at Ege University in Cypress to the benefit of every member of TN, and its visitors..And not only offering a wide variety of species, but documenting every post with valuable information/notations.

So I make this humble amphibian offering in thanks.

Job well done! :)

The Gulf Coast Toad (Bufo valliceps) is a fairly large toad reaching lengths of over 4 inches. This shot today is a baby, perhaps 1" in length.
Some exceptional specimens may reach 5 inches. The most distinguishing characteristic of the Gulf Coast Toad is the dark lateral (side) stripe running the full length of the toad behind the eye. Another very distinguishing characteristic is the deep valley found between the eyes. The color pattern is variable. Many specimens are very dark and nearly all black, others may be greenish white, or even a gray-green, as can be seen in the photos. A light middorsal stripe is present like in many other species of toads.

Excellent image Howard,
You can't get any sharper then this shot. Wonderful DOF and POV, you must have been laying on your stomach to capture this angle. Very fine detail, especially in the eyes, making this a great photo.

Hi Howard

Ok, so now the Birdman, Spiderman, and Insectman have also become a Frogman... Fortunately you do not change your name as often as one of our other positronic friends on the site (chuckle).

Seems like this little customer kept very still for the shoot. At 1/8 second shutter speed you had to have something very stationary (or frozen) to avoid any movement on the shot. At least I am confident that you did not condition this frog in your refrigerator like I've seen some other members do with their butterflies before a shoot. With that extended DOF you managed to capture excellent details and isn't it amazing what beautiful eyes frogs tend to have.

At 5" this is quite a big frog, but as a matter of interest, have you ever heard of our African bull frog - Pyxicephalus adspersus? At max 10" (25cm) and 4½ pounds (2kg) it surely must be the world's heavy weight champion. This frog feed on anything it can fit into its mouth; including insects, small rodents (such as mice), reptiles, birds, amphibians (including other frogs), and it would even take some small snakes. One need to keep your fingers clear when you are photographing this monster.

Good work and a wonderful dedication to Bayram (the Frog professor).
Regards
Loot

Hello Howard,
Though the toad may be humble, the portrait is not and it makes a fine tribute to our friend and herpetologist Bayram. His enthusiasm and knowledge has certainly done much to make us more aware of snakes, lizards and amphibians.
Once again the flawless technical qualities are enhanced by the great low POW and the pose of this Gulf Coast Toad.
TFS this 'beauty' and have a good Sunday,
Ivan

Great dedication Howard, and you are right, Boreocypriensis is great to read, I am even beginning to enjoy pictures of snakes, frogs and the likes like I never did before! When we know about something we start liking it... and your picture is superb, as usual, with your tenacious photographic eye. Perfect, much details and b eautiful natural colours. I love the tiny film of water in which the frog is "bathing". Thank you Howard, and congratulations to both of you!

Hallo Howard
Bayram was a very popular person on Friday with both you and me dedicating an image to him. I don't know if I ever considered frogs to be cute. But looking at this baby toad, I have changed my mind and decided that they can. Well if I look at this one anyway. You have captured this little one in a great pose, displaying some fine details to appreciate. The texture of the skin and the patterns on the body is clearly visible. The big copper and golden coloured eyes is very eye catching and it seems as if this one had no problem with you and your camera. In fact it looks as if it was posing just for you. Great eye contact and a great dedication to our mutual friend.
Kind regards
Anna

Bonjour Howard
Très belle prise, excellentes couleurs et détails, sujet inquiétant quand il sera grand.

Hey Howard you mean to say this is subject of yours is just an inch in legth?...Wow...the wonders macro shots can do to show little creations on earth....the details are so fine and rich in this capture of the baby Gulf Coast Toad. The notes have been helpful and the slant PoV used works quite well in your shot giving a nice view of each of the part explained. The valley between the eyes give an interesting show. The lighting, clarity and sharpness are perfect.

Hi Howard,
what a good portrait of the Gulf coast toad, what a fitting dedication! The toad reminds me of the good old Texas days; the toads gathered in numbers under the patio light to catch insects, peaceful creatures them.
Thank you for this presentation.
best regards
Dietrich

Hello Howard!
Last time I visited your gallery rather long time ago, and now I see what great pictures I overlooked. This is a great macro of species not known for me before. I like especially its skin - rather unusual :) Lovely low POV and - as always - great DOF and sharpness. It is also a perfect dedication to Bayram, very good specialist in herpetology.
TFS and have a nice Sunday!
Radomir

Wow! Excellent pov and almost whole of the toad is sharply focussed. Good details, and the expression on the toad's face is very captivating.

great sharp closeup, TFS Ori
