Rosie and I were hiking a trail in Radnor State Park near Nashville, Tennessee when we spotted this buck coming through the brush. The young buck is just starting to grow his antlers which are in velvet at this stage of growth.

The buck stopped and started to groom his coat when I took this shot at about twenty yards. His coat has that reddish appearance to it, but will change later on this fall to a brownish gray.

We probably saw a dozen or so deer that day and they were all browsing in the thick brushy areas. It took a lot of time and patience to get one to step out in the open for a shot.

It was fairly dark in the woods, so I used a flash with my telephoto lens to bring out the details. I could have used a higher ISO but I tend at times to get too much noise when I crop, so I stuck with ISO 400 for this shot.

Hi Ron
Great shot of this Deer. Very sharp and I like the pose you captured.
Great Job!!

I love the hue of his coat - and he seems to meticulous about it - a good thing. I love the action of grooming because it says to me that he cares not one whit that you're there - and photos like this are amazing. It's a sense, I think they have, when they know it is safe versus when it isn't. There's such a gentleness to this photo - and some serenity as well - or perhaps that what I get out of it.

Not sure how I missed this one ron. We have had some real busy fire issues out here....

A Superior antlered beast it is...and I am as happy as a kid seeing it is still surviving. Back in the "day", these were not quite as apparent...at least during my teen years...I do know from family history that these were much more common in the years of 1800's and on early...Very nice image Ron.

What a unique, humorous pose! It almost looks like a "come hither" glance over the shoulder. The lighting is really good in this shot -- even coverage but not overpowering. I'm curious, how did the deer respond to the flash?
