| This Alaskan brown bear (a.k.a. grizzly) is roaming the tidal flats at "Pack Creek" on Admiralty Island National Park in southeast Alaska. There are more grizzly bears here than in all the continguous U.S. combined....roughly 1 bear per square mile on the nearly 2,000-sq.-mile island. Pack Creek is very unique. In the 1930s a couple living in this wilderness adopted and raised orphaned bear cubs. They in turn had offspring that were used to humans, and over the decades the bears have grown accustomed to humans. You have to have a permit here through the Forest Service/Alaska Wildlife. I was on a kayak trip along the Inside Passage and camped nearby. Other visitors fly-in on float planes. It's an exhilerating expereince to get close to these bears. I was at a open viewing area and used a 300 mm zoom (x 1.5 digital = 450mm @ 35mm equiv.), hand-held. Since I was traveling in a kayak my equipment choices were limited and I opted for a compact lens vs. my usual Canon L series lens system, which was too bulky for this trip. |

Great imagery with interesting colors! Well done!

Hi,
Great Image. Very colorful and nicely composed picture. Inspite of Equipememnt, the picture has story telling point.
I like the "bands" of color in this photo. The black color of the bear contrasts very nicely against the ground. And thanks, too, for the well-written description.
What causes these unusual colors?
