Baby Bison or Buffalo
(Bison bison)

The bison is a member of the bovine family. Commonly called “buffalo” (which is actually a different species not found in North America), it is the largest land mammal in North America. There are two subspecies: the wood bison in northern Canada and the plains bison which once roamed across much of the continent. The bison has a large head with relatively small, curving horns. Its dark brown coat is long and shaggy on the forequarters, including the front legs, neck, and shoulders, while the rest of the body has shorter, finer hair.

Bison have been transplanted to Alaska from Montana in 1928, after becoming almost extinct in America. Twenty of these animals were delivered to an area around Delta Junction and by 1985 the population had grown to approximately 700.

Calves are born anytime from May to August and at first have a brownish red coat. At ten weeks old, this brownish red coat starts to darken and about five weeks later, turns to the dark brown color. They are very active almost immediately after birth, being able to run and kick their hind legs up in the air about three hours after birth. They also begin grazing at an early age - about six days old. They will stay with their mother, following her until the next spring, when they are about a year old, before they venture out on their own.

More infomation on Alaskan bison can be found here.

Hi . What a cute little thing. I have never seen a young Bison before. Very thick set in size compared with a young calf of the cow we have on farms. you have captured it with good detail and natural looking colours. well done TFS.
Nick..

Hi Paul,

Very nice baby, and very good photo! Thank you,

Eugene

I remember being surprised on seeing bison in Alaska back in the 70's. This little fellow look healthy. I wonder if Alaska bison suffer from brucellosis and from the ire of local ranchers? It is a nice image for spring with the young fresh grass and this newborn. Sharpness and color are nice.

Hi Paul,
Colors complimenting each other and giving the picture a very soft and soothing feel. Great OOF BG adding to the softness and highlighting the calf at the same time. very good light, again adding to the softness.

Hi Paul

Too cute and cuddly for words. So, if that is the case then I don't have any more words to add.

Ok, you know me; I am too tempted and talkative not to say something else. Even though this little guy is still so small one can see that, that head was made for bumping. Just look at the solid bone structure of the forehead and the thick neck.

I just love how the colours of the calf and the grass contrasts yet compliment each other. The details are strong and well defined and the composition is great. The OOF pasture created a lovely BG and the exposure was perfectly controlled.

Very well done MF and TFS.

Hi Paul, nice shot of this calf. Focus on the animal is very good, while you've nicely muted out the background. Colour and detail on the calf are very good. Where's mama?

Thanks, John

Hi Paul!
Long time since you presented any picture on TN, so welcome back! :) Especially that this is a very beautiful and sharp photo. Bravo also for the note.
It is really nice that this species survived in the wild, what often can not be said according to amphibian species...
And just for the end, I strongly recommend you to watch new series by David Attenborough entitled Life in Cold Blood" - the 5 movies are simply great! You just have to watch them! :)
All the best from someone who also likes frogs and toads ;)
