DENALI

Mount McKinley or Denali in Alaska is the highest mountain peak in North America, at a height of approximately 20,320 feet (6,194 m). It is the centerpiece of Denali National Park.

Mount McKinley has a larger bulk and rise than Mount Everest. Even though the summit of Everest is about 9,000 feet (2,700 m) higher as measured from sea level, its base sits on the Tibetan Plateau at about 17,000 feet (5,200 m), giving it a real vertical rise of little more than 12,000 feet (3,700 m). The base of Mount McKinley is roughly a 2,000-foot plateau, giving it an actual rise of 18,000 feet (5,500 m).

The mountain is also characterized by extremely cold weather. A thermometer left exposed at an elevation of 15,000 feet on Mount McKinley over 19 years recorded a temperature of −100°F (−73.3°C) at some point during its exposure. There is also an unusually severe risk of altitude illness for climbers, due to not only its high elevation but also its high latitude. At the equator, a mountain as high as Mount McKinley would have 47% as much oxygen available on its summit as there is at sea level, but because of its latitude, the pressure on the summit of McKinley is even lower.

THERMAL BRAIDING

The river's flow falls and rises during the day as it is predominantly fed by glacial meltwater (little thawing at night, so the flow falls off). The ground over which the river flows is frozen solid a couple of feet below [permafrost]. The water is warmer therefore melting and removing the land below. The large amounts of newly eroded material is greater than the energy in the river can carry, so some is dropped, creating the multitude of channel you can see in the lower part of the shot.

Hi James,
almost looks like a painting, or a backdrop to a film. That's a BIG landscape. I once read a story about two climbers who got trapped up there in a winters storm for 5 days...the windchill factor was -80!!
Great shot, thanks for sharing it.
Paul

Hi James,

You have managed to capture a magnificant view. Very well composed, colours are extremely beautiful and there is great depth of view that just seems to continue forever.

Hi James,

Fantastic shot of Mount McKinley and the river. I was lucky enough to see it looking just like this. A wonderfully layered picture with the water, land, mountain and sky. Beautiful colors and a lovely composition.

Hi James!

It's wonderful and majestic! This picture shows us how small and little we are in front of nature's power and beauty. You made a good job in scanning, and the colours are superb. But what is much mor important in this picture is what it expresses and the emotions it awakens.

Kind regards

Markus
