Prickly Pear Blossoms turn to Red Fruit

This is the third of three images on prickly pear cacti blossoms...

This image shows the ripened fruit of the prickly pear cactus. It grows and matures over a period of several months after the blossoms get pollinated. This fruit is very, very tasty but does contains lots of seeds. It is used to make jams, jellies and candy. Sometimes they are distilled into liquor.

It is an easy fruit to harvest because they are plentifully found, they have few cactus spines, they are within easy reach and they are long lived on the cactus when ripe.

The cactus in the background is an Organ Pipe which only grows in extreme southern Arizona and northern Mexico.

The related earlier prickly pear images...

The first is a macro closeup of the the yellow blossom:

The second is a wider view of cactus and blossoms in its natural environment:

Hello SC! Good sharpness, nice texture. Very good contrast. Nice shot. Well done!

Very smart there...you have a different contrast of the two of same variety cactus in 1st and 2md thirds then a base collection of a different variety altogether in the top thirds. wise use of graphic artists eye!

Hi Davidson,
Wonderful shot of these cactus' in full blossom. Looks beautiful and a bit different. Good lighting and I like your chosen POV to portray them - have to be extra careful because of those long thorns. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
