Cylindropuntia versicolor - Staghorn Cholla
Synonym: opuntia versicolor
The Sonoran desert of southern Arizona and northern Mexico is very beautiful in the Spring. This is just one example of that. Bright colors are everywhere. In the background of this picture you see a blossom bud just before opening.
This is a Staghorn Cholla blossom. There are many species of cholla. Chollas are distinguishable in that they have many cylindrical shaped segmented branches that are linked together to form the plant. Chollas are one of the most common cacti found in Southern Arizona.

Added Note:
There is an ongoing discussion at CactiGuide.com regarding my identification of this cacti as C. versicolor (Staghorn Cholla). Some suggest this might be Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa (Buckhorn Cholla). When that is finally resolved I might have to change this identification. :)
