Teddy Bear Cholla - Opuntia bigelovii
One of my favorite cacti in the Sonoran desert is the Teddy Bear Cholla. It is also known as "jumping cholla" because of the spiny segments that break and fall of te plant and then seem to jump up off the ground to cling tightly to your shoes or clothes.
It can reach 3 to 5 feet tall, grows in large groups of plants and has a bright yellow blossom in the Spring. The stem has a dense covering of yellowish barbed spines that makes it difficult to see the stem itself. It also makes them very difficult to pull off when a "cholla ball" gets stuck on you. I know, I've had that happen many times. And they have a chemical coating that makes them sting for a day or so.
They grow in impenetrable stands of cacti that are like a dense forest. |
