Smooth Chain Fruit Cholla, or Jumping Cholla
Cylindropuntia fulgida (Engelm.) F.M. Knuth
also known as Opuntia fulgida

There is a lot of desert flora shown in this image but in the foreground are a couple of examples of Cylindropuntia fulgida (Opuntia fulgida) shown in its native environment. They are the tree-like cacti in the immediate foreground. Saguaros are the tall cacti in the background.

I uploaded this to be a complimentary photograph to the very beautiful blossom of this cactus you see here:
Delicate Beauty

The example in the left foreground shows the 'chain fruit' that gives this cactus its common name. The 'chain fruit' are the knob-like chain 'things' you see hanging down from the branches of the cactus. After blossoms are pollinated those knobs are the resulting cactus fruit that grow later.

This picture was taken in the Superstition Mountain Wilderness area east of Phoenix, Arizona USA.

This image is included as part of the theme "cactus flowers":

Hello SC! Amazing picture. Wonderful colors. Good sharpness, very good lightness. Original capture. Good luck!

great mixed vegetation , TFS Ori

VERY interesting how the polarizer worked on the image...I would not have noticed the subtle difference had you not mentioned it... but now should assume since it was used that it was the unit that brought out the sky so well..and of course the detail in this entangled area is good enough to make out one thing from another...you do spend some time composing these don't you? It sure looks like a lot of thought is put into your images...I shall revisit you the day after this one...
