Cylindropuntia versicolor - Staghorn Cholla
Synonym: opuntia versicolor
One of the characteristics of this species of cactus is that it has a variety of different colored blossoms. This one has a reddish bronze colored blossom compared with the ruby red ones of the same species here:
Staghorn in Red
Note that insects have been so busy with this flower that there is pollen scattered all over the petals.
Though I believe this is a youthful green stemmed C. versicolor it looks very similar to C. acanthocarpa (Buckhorn Cholla). Those two species are confused with each other and photographs of one species is often wrongly associated with other. I even saw the EXACT same photograph (similar to this one) used to identify both species in the SAME online source.
A defining characteristic of one variety of versicolor is a purple stemmed plant in mature specimens that acanthocarpa does not have. The green stemmed variety like this one is what makes them difficult to tell apart. |

Hello SC Davidson,
Good looking details in this flower under the light. I heard this plant has some medicinal values and the clustered spikes on the stem is unique to this plant.
Regards,
jusni

Hi Steve, another beautiful cacti flower from you - I can't keep up with you I'm afraid.
I like the golden/red colour of the petals - it must glow in the sun. And it is very prickly too.
Well done
Janice
