CJ's Desert Dwellers: Cactus Wren Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus

Family: Troglodytidae (Wrens)
Size: 18-22cm (7-8.75in)
Wingspan: 25 cm ( 11 in)
Weight: 39 g ( 1.4 oz)
Voice:They are very vocal, with a raspy note that increase in rapidity. Their song is a low, unmusical krrr, krrr, krrr and a low hollow call kot given in series.They have a lot of low clicking/croaking noises. I'm often asked, "what's that?"

Cactus Wren Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus is the state bird of Arizona

Distinguished from other wrens by its larger size and heavy spotting. In adults, the spotting gathers into a large cluster on the upper breast. This is an adult and it's offspring. It was following the adult around to the various feeding stations and begging.

It's range is the southwestern US into central Mexico.

They make their nests in cactus. These Cactus Wrens Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus are perching in a Cane Cholla Opuntia spinosior. The yellow areas are acually the seed pods, formed after the cholla flowers. The purple in the flesh is due to stress from cold.

Nice shot, good composition and relatively sharp. You might want to dodge the eyes to bring out more color and perhaps darken it a bit. (seems bright on my monitor)

Looks like the light was fairly harsh, but you have managed it well. I like the composition showing two of these guys. Nice POV and the clear blue BG compliments the shot. :-)

Double trouble. They have a mischievous look to them.
Fantastic sharpness and light (maybe a bit bright on my screen).
Magnificently presented against the blue Arizona sky and on the typical cacti.
