There is a large group of teenaged thrashers like this one. Either they don't mind the intense heat and the strong hot breezes or they are too young to know better but they are just about the only birds not grabbing food and then running into the shade. They can be seen on tops of trees and bushes practicing their beautiful singing. They are mimics like the Mockingbirds and are wonderful to listen to.

Curve-billed Thrasher

The Curve-billed Thrasher is generally 25 to 28 cm (10 to 12 inches) in length, slender in build with a long tail, and a long, curved, sickle-shaped bill. It is pale grayish-brown above with lighter-colored underparts that are vaguely streaked. The tips of the tail are streaked with white, and the sides of the tail are a darker color than its back. The eye of an adult is usually a vivid orange or red-orange, although immature birds have a yellow eye.

The Curve-billed Thrasher is found commonly throughout the deserts and brush-filled areas of the south-western United States, from about the Sonoran Desert of Arizona and across New Mexico to west Texas, as well as most of Mexico, from the Sonoran-Chihuahuan Deserts and south through the Mexican Plateau to regions south of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt in south-central Mexico.

The Curve-billed Thrasher most often roosts in a tall tree or spiny vegetation, preferring a cactus. The nest is a loosely woven cup made of thorny twigs. The female lays 2 to 4 eggs, which are bluish-green and speckled with brown. The eggs are incubated by both sexes, and hatch after about thirteen days. The young will leave the nest after 14 to 18 days after hatching.

The Curve-billed Thrasher feeds on ground-dwelling insects, as well as seeds, and berries. It often pushes out Cactus Wrens in its area.

Very nice image Jane,
The way he has his mouth wide open he kind of reminds me of a dog panting, when it is really hot outside.
Very sharp focused photo, nice eye contact. You can see the wind ruffling up his feathers.
Well done!! TFS.

Spettacolare ritratto, molto bella ed inusuale la composizione con il profilo della capo che risalta sullo sfondo azzurro del cielo, buona nitidezza e bello il particolare dell'occhio, molto belli anche i colori. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

They're great birds, and strong to resist such heat! And you're lucky to live that dryness... here, it's been raining so much lately, incredible. Montreal is sunny and here, at St.Alphonse, it's so wet and rainy. Humidity rises and mushrooms grow in the flower garden... yet, your bird is beautiful and the notes interesting and your sky is the most beautiful blue! Thank you,

Francine

Hello My Friend Jane,
Well I see you have continued your great images while I was away. This is a fine image with incredible eye detail. Your heat would reduce me to a puddle of grease on the sidewalk. I don't handle heat well at all. But your images bring me great pleasure, thank you Jane.
