House Finch

The House Finch is a gregarious bird, forming loose flocks in breeding season, and flocks that may number into the hundreds in the winter. They roost in close proximity to each other, sometimes touching. These vegetarian birds are strongly attracted to feeders, where they prefer small sunflower seeds. At other times of the year they feed on buds, seeds, and fruits—they feed on so much fruit that in parts of the West, they may be considered pests.

House Finches are slim, sparrow-sized birds (5.0 to 5.75 inches in length) with short, stubby conical bills and square-tipped tails. Males typically have a "headband" of bright red on the forehead and supercilium. Chin, throat, and upper breast are red as is the rump. The top and back of the head and back are brown with faint darker brown streaks. Wings and tail are also brown. Lower breast and undertail area are white with broad brown streaks.

Females and immature male House Finches are faintly streaked brown from forehead to rump. Wings and tail are brown. The chin, throat, and breast are uniformly streaked brown on white.

Hi BSJ,

Here also hot but rainy:) You captured this beuty in a lovely pose while looking for a shadow:) Great shot in all around.
Have a nice day sis!
Cheers,

Bayram

Hi jane,
I like the way it turned his head to take a quick look at you. I also like the natural framing.
I do think you had to brighten up this photo too much causing to give you this greyish flat photo. You might want to check your levels to see if there is a gab on the shadow side and use the slider to adjust.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Jane...

Hot or not, the bird seems to be smiling. Happy to be alive... :)

POV is wonderful, as is the overall composition, detail, DOF, and exposure. Your bird photography has always been good but I think it is getting better and better... very well done and congratulations!

Helo Jane,

You continue exploiting very good the zoom of the SX10IS, excellent job, with a slight light surplus, but it did not arrive to affect to the picture. Very good details in the bird and branches. The POV is difficult but it is good handled by you.

TFS!

Jesús

Hello Jane,

The beak is so distinctive for a finch, although I have never seen this type of finch in England. I like the coy pose!
The textures are well captured and the framing is lovely.
The colours seem a lttle flat, possibly by brightening the shot. An overlay layer at 25-30% will lift this considerably.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hello Jane,
Nice photo in beautiful natural colours. But the photo looks a bit flat, there's almost not a DOF. Excellent sharpness, pose and eye-contact. Good POV and composition.
Have a great weekend,
Peter

Hello Jane,
Though the quality of this image is not your best, I like the pose and the framing of the branches and leaves round this male House Finch and he turned round to allow a good catchlight in the eye. He does look as though he has suffered from the heat!
Thanks for this and for your kind words on my 600th!
Have great weekend,
Ivan
