The Phoenix Zoo is a zoo that you can also see free native animals making their homes on the zoo grounds, just like this Northern Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea).


Burrowing owls have bright yellow eyes. The beak can be yellow or greenish depending on the subspecies. The legs are incompletely feathered and grayish in color. They lack ear tufts and have a flattened facial disc. The owls have prominent white eyebrows and a white "chin" patch which they expand and display during certain behaviors.

Hi Everton,

I just read an article about the Pygmy Owl possibly becoming an endangered species. I would love to see one of those 7 inch long owls. And now I see your lovely Burrowing Owl staring at me with those big yellow eyes. Nice pose, colors and details of the face and plummage.
