I like this photo despite the light being a bit harsh and contrasty. It was very early morning in the clear desert air, and the shadows were very strong...a problem for that camera. We were headed to a particular spot to photograph Mount Whitney (the farthest back peak on the right side). I snapped this whilst running along the trail, as the sun rose faster than we did it seems! I'll post the shot we were aiming to get next time. : )

In the foreground is an area known as the Alabama Hills. Alabama Hills are a range of hills in the Owens Valley of California, near Lone Pine, California. Managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management as the Alabama Hills Recreation Area, they are protected. The rounded contours of the Alabamas contrast with the sharp ridges of the Sierra Nevada to the west; however, the Alabamas are no older than the Sierra. Different patterns of erosion account for the difference. Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, towers several thousand feet above this low range, which itself is 1,500 feet above the floor of Owens Valley. However, gravity surveys indicate that the Owens Valley is filled with about 10,000 feet of sediment and that the Alabama's are the tip of a very steep escarpment.

During America's Civil War (1860's) many miners from the southern Confederacy were in this part of California. When they learned that a Confederate Cruiser named the Alabama had sunk many Federal ships, they named the area where they had many claims, the Alabama Hills.

Hi Evelynn,

this is a lovely shot.
When there's little cloud I see this alot.
I like the composition with the contrast of landscape between fore and background.

Hello Evelyn,
Wonderful shot of these mountains in the morning sun. I really like the limited range of colours here. Beautiful depth of focus and sharpness is perfect.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Wonderful shot, Evelynn. I was looking forward to sme of the color of those Alabama Hills, and here it is. The moon is a nice touch, too -- VERY Ansel Adams (well, except for the color). I suggest a bit of a crop on the bottom to bring that round rock into the fg (virtually, anyway).

Hello Evelynn,
Great craggy landscape in fantastic sunrise lighting. The tiny setting moon is brought to mind also by the lunar feel of the mountains.
Great sharp perspective and fine composition.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Evelynn!
Very nice presentation! I like warm colours and panoramic POV. Details and DOP are also very good.
TFS and have a nice evening!

There is also a wonderful mini-series from one of the offbeat networks done partly in this area. I can related to the Native Americans through viewing this shot. My mainstay group was in the Dakotas, same tribe and Sioux as well as others of the plains...but this area although quite barren in population, is rich in history which you descriptive and show well.

I am one of those folks who likes contrasts...but ya already knew that. I like to play with contrast before I do anything else. This is really a nice shot in that respect.

Hi Evelynn,
Those shadows make this photo very appealing. Fantastic landscape that looks like moonscape under the moon. Colors and clarity are impressive. Regards,
Hakan

Hi Evelynn . This is avery good landscape. the warm colours and very good use of the light.i like the shadows in the hills. very well done TFS. great notes to. thanks.
Nick..

Very nice all the same Evelynn! I did a BW conversion using Lightroom, as high contrast shots like this one have good BW potential. Nicely composed.

Hi Evelyn,
I can now imagine what kind of temperatures there are in this area during summer. The sunlight must be killing at that period. Just the fact that you got harsh sunlight and still a well visable moon is very interesting. The difference in color between the Alabama hills and the larger mountain range in the back is strange to see. Does it have something to do with the continental divide? This really looks like a desolate place to be.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Evelynn,

You really know how to take a good landscape. I'm turning green, and if I didn't admit that my nose would grow. It is beautiful!

Jan-Hendrik

My points are finished, but I'll be back in the morning to give them.

Hi Evelynn, splendid mountain landscape with wonderful warm colors, great composition with moon at sunrise, very well done, ciao Silvio

I really like the light and the contrast of warm and cool colors on this one. There is quite an array of textures. The diagonal line created by the dry bushes in the foreground gives the picture a lot of depth. Very crisp image.

Hi Evelynn.
Wonderful picture.I like him very much this light from morning sunshine.Amazing all nuances of brown color on ground. And nice shadows on sharp mountains peaks.Beautiful composition with very interesting foreground.Nicely caught moon on clean blue sky too.Superb done this landscape picture.
TFS,with greeting Milos.

Hi Evelynn,
The textures of Owen Valley are incredible, the mountain range very powerful. The Moonset is an extra bonus that makes this image even more wonderful. I like the crop aspect that you applied in your workshop and you also achieved a nice smooth sky with the filter but then it created an artifact halo outlining the top of the mountain range. :)

Hi Evelynn

Cool-looking mountain range, nothing really like that in Australia.
Good light and I like the contrasting harsh light. I also think that Mike's crop frames the scene a bit better. I like the moon and great sharpness.
