[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photo was taken at the Ano Nuevo State Reserve.

It was a bright sunny day, warm by February standards (almost 70 degrees F, 20 degrees C). Lying side by side on the beach were over 4000 elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) soaking up the sun.
Throughout the rookery erupted small sand flurries like the ones seen in this photo. The ranger said that no one knows for sure why the elephant seals throw sand on themselves with the help of their flippers. One theory is that they are covering themselves with sand to protect themselves from sunburn. Any other theories out there???

Hi Manyee,
a very good picture of the sun bathing elephant seals,
I have also heard the theory about sand cover.
Well composed, good POV and details.
Well done.

Hi Manyee,
this is wonderful, I've never seen such a colony with my own eyes.
I like the "action" here, throwing the sand - that's so nice, thanks

Hello Manyee!

Great picture of this happy colony. Great idea to photograph some action here. Sands storms added dynamic to your shot for sure. Good moment and place :-)

Hi Manyee,
Great image of elethant seals and very well captured of moment,
excellent POV, nice and natural colours.
Thanks for sharing!

It is a very interesting capture.
The repetition on the shapes create a great composition, and the moment captured is very nice. The motion on the sand is perfect. TFS :)

Great timing, you succeeded to freeze the action but keep the impression of motion. Excellent capture!
