[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is not the best photo quality-wise (it was very overcast), but I still would like to share this moment in nature. We went for a walk on the beach after a severe winter storm. All kinds of debris were lying about on the sand, including carcasses of all kinds. We came upon this young gull, who was seemingly trying to figure out how to go about this unusual feast of a huge octopus.

Disgustingly beautiful moment ! Not the sharpest nor excelling in pleasant light or chromatism but this capture certainly looks striking.

With this camera you should have been able to do much better. But everyone has to start somewhere. It is ceratinly an interesting composition. I would have been a great shot if only you'd taken a little more time to manage the light properly and get the focus right.

Hi Manyee
Welcome on TN, I was a bit off site, but good to have another birder on site too.
This is the type of picture one dreams of, and I appreciate you posting it. We do not always get what we want how we want it, but TFS this moment. Try and widen your scope of the note to include the octopuss and the gull by name.

Welcome to TN, a bit belated but welcome none the less. :)

The photo has a tremendous impact. What a moment! As you mentioned it not technically a great shot but it has personality. :) Very well done and worth the post.

Your composition (placement of bird and octopus) is good, and the overcast day provides better lighting than strong sunlight with its harsh shadows.
Better camera settings would help when you come across a similar situation. A large aperture (ƒ2.8-5.6) and centered metering would help, as would a tripod.
However, we have to make the most of what we have.
