| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| This was taken about an hour before sunset in Joshua Tree National Park, in the Cottonwood wash below Cottonwood Springs. I didn't try to disturb the bird, but I think it was sleeping and not dead. Hanging upside down at about eye level! I believe it's a Black chinned hummingbird. I've seen a little bit on the internet about "hummingbird torpor" so maybe that's whats going on here! |

That's incredible, great shot! I never saw this myself but heard about it. Yes, you are correct, this is most likey a bird in torpor ("mini-hibernation").
If you would allow me, I will show this in my "Ecology of Birds" class. I will give you full credit. Great document!! First I thought that you posted a joke and turned the photo, but the shrub tells otherwise. This is an example of "learning about nature through photography". I am glad I am part of this site.
