American White Pelican
Pelecanus erythrorhynchos

Pelican (blanc) d'Amerique (French)
Pelicano Norteamericano (Spanish)

Breeding on lakes throughout the northern Great Plains and mountain West, the American White Pelican is one of the largest birds in North America. It winters along the coasts, but breeds only inland.

Description
Large, white waterbird.
Long bill with extensible pouch.
Legs short.
Body large and heavy.
Feet webbed.
Wings long and broad, with black trailing edge.
Tail short.
Size: 127-165 cm (50-65 in)
Wingspan: 244-290 cm (96-114 in)
Weight: 4500-9000 g (158.85-317.7 ounces)
Sexes look alike.

Sound
Generally silent away from nesting colony. Nestling give whining grunts for food; adults have low, hoarse display calls.

Conservation Status
A long-term decline stopped in the 1960s, and populations have increased since then.

Cool Facts
The White Pelican does not dive for fish as the Brown Pelican does. Instead, it dips its head underwater to scoop up fish. Several pelicans may fish cooperatively, moving into a circle to concentrate fish, and then dipping their heads under simultaneously to catch fish.

This is a nice, sharp, well exposed image, ManYee. The close crop is effective. The impact is heightened by the good value range.

Wonderful tight composition, beautiful warm lighting and the sharpness and details are superb. Background blur is very nice as well putting the full emphasis on the pelican itself. Great shot.

That is so focused on the eye, it looks real life here. This is a great detailed close up.Colours are rich, and I like the crop.
This is one bird I wish I had in the area for photos.

Very nice details in this odd looking bird. I really like the close up and croping, it seems very artful. You acheived excellent results on the exposure Manyee. Your Grandson JinYao keeps getting cuter with every new posted image of him. TFS :)

Hi ManYee

Ha-ha-ha. I see dear grandma has disappeared all together since the arrival of his royal highness the Emperor from the East. And a right little prince he is, especially when seen on the larger version of the cute photo that now adorns your "Intro Page". Enjoy him while you can for it perhaps might be some time before you see him again after this visit.

Anyway, back to your pelican and its staring eye. I am convinced it is worth a "WOW". That dark BG makes the slightly pinkish-white bird with the bright orange beak and neck stand out like a sore thumb. The tight crop worked excellent for this portrait shot. The details are exquisite showing every bit of the delicate features of the bird. The colours are marvellous and well saturated and the exposure was near perfect.

Great work MF and TFS.
Best regards (to the rest of the family too)
Loot

PS. I just had to do some catch up on this one and on some communication because the Chinese New Year has "almost ended" and I still remained over due.

Hi Manyee
It is beautiful Fantastic portrait. Firs of all beautiful light. Greast saturated colors perfect exposure on white

Great shot!! Excellent details and good lighting. The reflections on the eye look lively.

Manyee,
This is a perfect in your face with direct eye contact portriat of this very mejestic white pelican. I saw them in Kenya, but they are little more pinkish from eating the shrimps from the soda lake. I posted one a few week ago. You captured this one perfectly, the sharpness and clarity is spot on. Great details on the white velvety feathers. I wouldn’t want you taking a portrait of me, show too much wrinkles.
I would like to see one of the whole bady too if you have chance to post them later.
