On a hike through Redwoods Regional Park, blotches of red in a clearing caught our eye. When we approached, we realized that they were made of thousands and thousands of ladybugs clustered together (See Workshop).

Ladybugs

Ladybugs, also called lady beetles or ladybird beetles, are a very beneficial group. They are natural enemies of many insects, especially aphids and other sap feeders. A single lady beetle may eat as many as 5,000 aphids in its lifetime. Many species of lady beetles are present in Kentucky and they are common in most habitats.

Adult lady beetles have very characteristic convex, hemispherical to oval shaped bodies that can be yellow, pink, orange, red, or black, and usually are marked with distinct spots. This is a type of warning coloration to discourage other animals that may try to eat them. Like many other brightly-colored insects, they are protected by an odorous, noxious fluid that seeps out of their joints when the insects are disturbed. The bright body coloration helps some predators to remember the encounter and avoid attacking insects with similar markings.

Adult females usually lay clusters of eggs on plants in the vicinity of aphid, scale, or mealybug colonies. The alligator-like larvae are also predators. They are spiny and black with bright spots. Although they look dangerous, lady beetle larvae are quite harmless to humans. After feeding on insect prey for several weeks, the larva pupates on a leaf. Adults tend to move on once pests get scarce, while the larvae remain and search for more prey.

Hello Manyee,
Though the shot in your workshop shows an impressive quantity of Ladybirds, you did right in choosing this shot as your main post. It is sharp with excellent composition and fine dark contrasting BG. This shot also shows a surprising variation in spots amongst the individual beetles.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hello Manyee,
Veeery interesting shot! I like the both of the ws and main photo. Impressive photo! Bravo and TFS. Greetings

Hello Manyee,
Amazing shot of this mass of Ladybirds which you've captured really well! They don't look like our Ladybirds as their shield wings seem more oblong and they have many spots! Fascinating! I wonder if somebody can explain this behaviour!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Any reasons for such well attended conventions, Manyee :-)?
Very well captured phenomenon.
The bush too looks like a quaint spider.

Hello Manyee,
a nice discovery and valuable nature document well presented for TN. Interestingly one can see different morphs, some with the others without black spots. It's not unusual and also known for other species of Coccinellidae.
Thank you for posting this picture. I would like to include in my 'THEME' on Coccinellidae. o.k.?
Best wishes, Peter

Oh wow! Never seen so many bugs in thie same place!
Good shot and document.
Andrea

Very well done. Excuse in shortness. TFS. Stev

Hi Manyee,
Great capture, wonderful details, magnificent colors and a ladybug with no spots, thanks for your work.
Rick

Did you bring home a bagful for the garden. I bet Dandre wanted to, even if he didn't take them. This is a great capture. I like the patterns and colors in it. The starburst shape of the seed pod?? and the diagonals make an interesting composition. I am always amazed at what you find in my home area...that I never saw!

Hello Manyee!
It is really nice to see so huge aggregation of Coccinellidae, especially that not so long ago another insect species was presented in the some situation on TN by Dietrich. It is nice to compare these two photos :)
I like this picture mainly because of its documentary value, but nice composition, good POV and DOF are also nice for my eyes :)
TFS and best greetings,
Radomir

Now this is an artistic composition. If it wasn't for the title I never would have known by looking at the thumbnail. Great shot Manyee... everytime I look at your work you keep improving.

Hi ManYee

Wow, what a "happy" family gathering. Judging by this and the supplementary workshop, in the aftermath, these ladybugs are going to have a heck of a time proving parentage and which gentlemanbugs are responsible towards which ladybugs for alimony (chuckle). What we see here is group paring on a grand scale, which is not such an unbeknown phenomena with certain bugs.

Well spotted and captured in this fine composition. The dark BG makes these signal red insects stand out well and the exposure ensured that even the blackish dried-out thistle show up clearly against the BG. Excellent colours and very sharp details adds to the visual stimulus of this posting.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Manyee.
I saw this one now for the first time and it is truly a ladybug world meeting :)
You captured very nicely, with everything on light and into focus, great colours too.
