I was going to title this post "Waiting", but after much research to find its ID, and upon reading the notes, it turns out that he is NOT waiting for anything, he is in diurnal torpor!

Waxy Monkey Leaf Frog
Phyllomedusa sauvagii

Phyllomedusa sauvagii, commonly known as the Waxy Monkey Leaf Frog, is a hylid frog belonging to the subfamily of South and Central American leaf frogs, Phyllomedusinae that inhabits the Chaco (dry prairie) of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. The subfamily consists of around 50 species in three well known genera, Phyllomedusa, Agalychnis and Pachymedusa. The vast majority of known species, including Phyllomedusa sauvagei, belong to the Phyllomedusa genus.

Phyllomedusa sauvagii has adapted to meet the demands of life in the trees. It does not need to return to the ground during the mating season, rather it lays its eggs down the middle of a leaf before folding the leaf, sandwiching the eggs inside. Its nest is attached to a branch suspended over a stream so that hatching tadpoles drop into the water. In common with other phyllomedusines, it presents physiological and behavioural adaptations to limit water loss including impermeabilisation of the skin by lipid secretions, excretion of uric acid (uricotelism) and diurnal torpor. Lipid secretions are produced in a special type of cutaneous gland and are spread over the surface of the skin by the legs in a complex sequence of wiping movements.

This shot was taken at the California Academy of Science in San Francisco through glass.

Hallo Manyee
This Waxy Monkey Leaf Frog is indeed a beauty and has lots of striking and prominent features. The shape of its face reminds me of that of a chameleon, and the texture on the skin makes it look if the poor thing has chicken pox. Putting the comical comment a bit aside, and to a more serious note, this is indeed a great image of this tiny, but strongly built frog. I like the pose from the side showing the profile to its best. It also shows the detail of the beautiful eye, the hutch back and the shape and size of the arms and paws to its best. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
Anna

Hi Manyee

Excellent perspective and composition. I think the picture has benefitted from the wider perspective you have chosen. The frog looks amazing .. very strange!

Hello Manyee !
This is such a gorgeous picture ! I love the Frog, she is so beautiful with this green color, and her pose is fantastic. The dark BG makes her stand out is the most beautiful way, and I also like all the details on the frgo, and the composition is perfect, and the POV is great, showing us a perfect profile of the animal. Very well done !

Even if at a museum, this is what TN is all about. How well done of Loot for adding it to the proper theme...I can see why of course...and someone correct me, but I do not believe I have seen one of these on TN before but if there is one...it certainly must not measure to this excellent work..through glass is NOT easy!
Bob

Hello Manyee friend,

Thanks for posting this photo, for me this frog is a rarity.

It is incredible that so lethargic during the day. Thanks for the note, is very good.

I am glad to see your photos, always learn a little of them because we have the same Canon. I would like to have more EXIF data for this photo.

Good work, good colors, good depth and a very nice composition.

Thanks for posting the photo and cropped workshop is to assess details of the species.

Greetings,

Jesús

Hello Manyee,
Amazing shot, seems to illustrate some strange story for children. Excellentely taken, we don't have the feeling of a shot through glass.
Great picture indeed.
Thanks a lot and kind regards
Anne
