Well, I'd say you are pretty steady if this is hand held. The action you got here is super. I've seen woodpeckers, and I've seen their nut filled holes but never the two at once.

Very nice Adam,
It's not everyday that you get to see a woodpecker storing up food for later use. Very detailed image, especially since it was taken hand held. The colors are very natural and the exposure is right on!! Love the eye contact!!

Hello Adam
50,000 that is absolutely nuts.
The work involved is daunting.Drill the holes, find the acorn and pound it into the hole.
Excellent capture,the POV is super.
This is a new one on me.
Great job.

amazing capture, do they eat the acorns? i know that woodpeckers eat insects. WE saw something similar at our Jerusalrm Botanical Gardens, Syrian Woodkeckers stuck acorns on stem junctions. greetings Ori

Hi Adam,
A great capture of this not so often seen and posted woodpecker, considering the conditions the is capture is fairly good and well worth posting,I guess you could always go back to try a better shot as to see on the tree it is a common visitor overthere,

What an interesting habit these bird have - I never realised that this is how they store their acorns. Look at all the holes the birds have made.
Good shot Adam, the bird is nice and sharp - colours and details show up really well

Hi Adam,
What a great pose. Caught with the hand (beak) in the cookie jar!
Excellent eye contact.
Amazing how big a nut he can hold in his beak and not choke.
A very fun picture. TFS. : )
I had no idea San Jose has so much wildlife. : 0

Excelente trabajo Adam, con unos colores muy bien captados un atractivo formato y muy bien encuadrada al poder observar esos curiosos de talles del tronco.
Un abrazo: Josep Ignasi.

Hi Adam,
What an amazing habit you have documented here..this is absolutely new for me...the capture even in shade looks wonderful with excellent clarity and focus. Superb action with the pecker bringing its share to the granary tree. The detail on the plumage looks neat and rich.
Initially i thought this to be a setting with holes in the tree to attract birds for the shoot, since i have heard some of the photographers here in TN arrange the scene in the most natural way to get the birds to come. But reading your accompanying note made me realise this is indeed nature's way for the Acorn Woodpecker. It must be quite a sight if one were to monitor the birds' arrivals and departures while filling up there "granary tree".
Very well done.
Thanks a lot for sharing.Let me also wish you and family a healthy and peaceful 2009
Cheers
Silpa
