African Yellow-Billed Hornbill
Tockus flavirostris

While the African Yellow-Billed Hornbill is a fairly large bird (average 56 cm), it is one of the smallest in the hornbill family. The Hornbill gets its name from its beak - which is unusually large, generally curved, and often has ridges. The tail of the Hornbill is long and is made up of 10 feathers.

The Hornbill's flight is rather clumsy because of the bird's rounded wings. Hornbills have the ability to skillfully seize swarming termites in flight and pursue grasshoppers on the ground with clumsy leaps.

Hornbills are omnivorous. They feed on insects and plant matter.

Hornbill breeding behavior is quite unique. With the female inside, the male walls-up the entry to their nest. A small hole is left through which the male feeds his family, and the female and the young defecate. The wall of the nest hold is good protection against predators. Female Hornbills lay up to 5 eggs which hatch after a month of incubation.

This picture was taken at the Happy Hollow Zoo in San Jose.

What a character, and what a great portrait.
Interesting note too. They sound like strange birds.
Theres a bit of a blueish cast at the bottom that you can probably fix no trouble.
Great photo though.

Hey Manyee
Bizarre looking bird, it kind of looks like a cross between a tocan and a kokaburra. Nicely captured, regards
Matt.

Hi Manyee, another great portrait you have created, Perfct colors, BG, POV, DOF, perfct work, TFS Kyle

Hi Manyee!

Nice portrait. Sharp focus and perfect exposure. I like the compositon and the shallow DOF. Its yellow and red beak really stand out in an almost monochrome image.

Great shot and TFS.

Hi ManYee
This is one heck of a cute bird and very well captured. These hornbills can become so tame and cause great excitement when they frequent the cafeterias in the game parks where children feed them by hand.
Your composition, cropping and framing is excellent. The vivid colours, the crisp details and the OOF BG give the shot amazing appeal. The lighting was also very well handled.
Great work and TFS.

Loot
