African Yellow-Billed Hornbill
Tockus flavirostris

While the African Yellow-Billed Hornbill is a fairly large bird (average 56 cm), it is one of the smallest in the hornbill family. The Hornbill gets its name from its beak - which is unusually large, generally curved, and often has ridges. The tail of the Hornbill is long and is made up of 10 feathers.

The Hornbill's flight is rather clumsy because of the bird's rounded wings. Hornbills have the ability to skillfully seize swarming termites in flight and pursue grasshoppers on the ground with clumsy leaps.

Hornbills are omnivorous. They feed on insects and plant matter.

Hornbill breeding behavior is quite unique. With the female inside, the male walls-up the entry to their nest. A small hole is left through which the male feeds his family, and the female and the young defecate. The wall of the nest hold is good protection against predators. Female Hornbills lay up to 5 eggs which hatch after a month of incubation.

This picture was taken at the Happy Hollow Zoo in San Jose.

Hi Manyee...........
I really really love this pict....perfect in all aspects, beautiful PoV, great DoF, sharp and detail!! amazingly nice! only BG above the head is abit distracting, cropping it won't help as well...hmmmm, I'm thinking of using some tools in Photoshops such as cloning tool to refine that area would help...I think I will do a workshop for it later...hope you will like it! :)

Hi there Manyee,

I think this is one of your best posts so far. Very sharp details (good feather detail) and very well exposed. I like the composition and the DOF a lot too. If I had to name a negative point (and it's a minor point) I would say it's the fact that the surroundings don't look very natural. You did try to mask that by the wide aperture though. Anyway, an excellent picture and the fierce look in the eye is great. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hi, Manyee.
Nice hornbill. Good composition, sharpness and exposure. I would try to clone out this red piece upper left corner. It tries to take attention from this beautiful bird.
