Prickly pear cactus represent about a dozen species of the Opuntia genus (Family Cactaceae) in the North American deserts. All have flat, fleshy pads that look like large leaves. The pads are actually modified branches or stems that serve several functions -- water storage, photosynthesis and flower production. Chollas are also members of the Opuntia genus but have cylindrical, jointed stems rather than flat pads.

It is in full bloom in the spring here in Death Valley National Park. The bright pink color really call for attention and you can spot them from afar.

Without much BS - just a great shot. You seem to know what photography is about. I don't post here, but decided to take a peek and the shot that happens to be first one I see is a piece of very good work. Congrats and keep enjoying photography!

An amazing shot, Way!
Nice to hear see you post here again...
I love the cactus and its flowers!
Bravo!

Hi Way!

The death Valley... delicious souvenirs from my wedding trip in 1982! But we were not so lucky with the vegetation, it was summer and almost the only plants we could see were at Furnace Creek. Your picture is marvellous and I paricularly like the well pronounced contrasts.

Kind regards

Markus

I like the way you have projected beauty in the ragged and barren countryside. The composition is excellent and of course, very competently executed. The net effect is almost a picture postcard from a most unlikely location.Way to go, Waylim!!

Hallo Way
You are spoiling my eyes with this lovely image. The combination of blues, greens and a little other colour in-between is a perfect match and is in wonderful harmony with one another. The cerise pink of the flowers in the foreground compliments this wonderful scenery to its best. The scenery as a whole is very harmonious to look at, you being one lucky photographer, being able to witness and capture this in real. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hello Way! Amazing cactus, wonderful landscape. Good POV and original composition. Perfect exposure. Ideal focus. Fantastic effect. Well done!

The brightness of the flowers and composition really make this. Worthy of a postcard.

Hi Way,

Beautiful landscape with these fascinating cactus. Loved the way you have composed the photo with the cactus getting the prominence.

TFS.

Hi Way ans so nice to see you here again :)
It's been a while...
Wow...this is really a stunning shot, my friend!
I really like everything about it: from the gorgeous in bloom cactus from the foreground all the way to the lovely mountains and fluffy clouds in the back.
You composition here is spot-on and you are right: the bright pink color really calls for attention :) So you did well to use this as a FG elements and create a nice base for everything else.
The colors everywhere are just superb, too and go to show that you handled your exposure very well.
Overall, a true treat to my eyes and a definite favorite!

Bravo and TFS
Horia
PS: thanks also for your very nice comment on my last shot. To answer your question regarding the blue sky, i think it's due to the circular polarizer. If you are shooting at about 90 degrees from the sun, the sky will be at it's darkest blue (fully polarized) while fading in both directions as that angle goes down...i don't know if i make sense to you now...i hope i do...if not, write me back :) Cheers anyway!

Hi Way,
What a wonderful composition. The flowering cactus in the FG is a beauty and gives this desert enviroment a verly lively feeling. I like how the vista alows for an endless view over the flat terain to the mointains.
TFS,
Niek
