[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Flowing lava is over 2000 degrees F. In this photo it is pushing thru from a tube just below the surface. There are two types of lava, pahoehoe, which is smoother and ropey(Pictured here), and 'A'a (pronounced "ah-ah") which is cinder like and clinkery.

"Vog" (volcanic smog) is the visible haze you see in the backround that forms when irritating sulfur dioxide and other volcanic gases combine and interact chemically with oxygen, moisture, dust, and sunlight. Kilauea emits about 2,000 tons of sulfur dioxide each day during eruption, now mainly from the still-open vent at Pu‘u ‘O‘o.

After breaking thru in a red hot glow, the lava will glaze over in seconds turning black again. I was standing so close to this to get the shot due to having a wide angle lens, that the hair on my legs started melting. The scary part is realizing that just below where you are standing, a river of this stuff is running just below the surface.

Trade winds commonly disperse the volcano's gases, so that the concentration is not generally hazardous. However, sulfur dioxide fumes can be concentrated near ground cracks along and down-wind from lava tubes.

Un décor sorti tout droit d'un film d'horreur! L'endroit semble irréel. Bravo!

This is a most interesting photo and note, Scott. I am not sure I would walk out to those hot lava rocks. Good detail in this new, soon-to-be landscape. Thank you.

Very good capture even if you are risking your life for it. I do hope the hair grows back :)

Superb document. Thsi series of yours is fascinating.

Hi Scott, I look forward to seeing your lava photos. Wow, that is HOT! My shots on Rangitoto were of the A'a variety. It must have been scary standing so close to it all, especially knowing about the poisonous gases and the hot river below you. Thank you for showing us this.

Scott, a very nice contrast: dull colors all around, and this vivid red shake on the bottom. Really nice.

Wow Scott how did you manage to keep the camera from melting! Nice work. Excellent composition. The grey with the 'hot' red is impressive. Congrats on a great post. Well done. TFS

Wow! Scott! The snow is melted here ;-)
You live dangerously...
A very interesting picture with a great note.
Thanks.

Interesting shot Scott,
Nice details, colours and clarity.
Must have been hot standing so close, and the gases must have been unpleasant.
Thanks for posting

Great shot Scott. Very interesting POV..makes ya wonder just how close ya got? Man, I can feel the heat from here! ;-)) Well done!!

How hot was it there when you took this shot.?
Excelent capture and details. Well done on this composition.

Impressive image, Scott! Looks like you've sent this from another planet, because the environment has no living element to remind it's on our mother earth. Very good details and well controlled light and colors. Very interesting post.

Scot, this is so interesting and impressive. The contrasts are striking. I would love to know more of how you go to shoot this scene and if possible more picture would be in order. :)

Awesome capture! I didn't get on the ground near Kiluaea - just flew over it in a plane. This is such a fantastic thing to see close up. The red is great contrast with the black.

It looks evil, like some huge creeping alien menace! Too close for me! Great photo!

Hi Scott... came across this late, but wow! I've known that the Hawaiian NP were high on my list, but now it may top it over Glacier. Wonderful showing!

Nice shot! Beautiful image, the bright colours are fantastic, great photo, excellent work!
and many thanks for sharing!
I like so much!
The composition gear up for a very fine result.
