[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a post for gerhardt, and a few others who asked if I had any more lava shots. The lava flows at the Kilauea Volcano change almost daily. It is a hot and rugged hike of about 2 1/2 miles thru the lava fields to reach the current flows. Sometimes there is not much to see, and a week later it may be running on the surface. The best thing to do is hike out in the daylight and then wait for dark to take photos. I saw some pretty amazing shots like that for sale in the stores. Having a large zoom would have made it easy, but only having a wide angle zoom forced me to get very close to take these photos. It was very hot! You have to be very careful were you walk. But, I really like the perspective it gives the photos. I did not get any really dramatic shots of big flowing lava, but I did get some dramatic landscape shots of miles of nothing but lava.

Flowing lava is over 2000 degrees F. In this photo it is pushing thru from a tube just below the surface. There are two types of lava, pahoehoe, which is smoother and ropey(Pictured here), and 'A'a (pronounced "ah-ah") which is cinder like and clinkery.

"Vog" (volcanic smog) is the visible haze you see in the backround that forms when irritating sulfur dioxide and other volcanic gases combine and interact chemically with oxygen, moisture, dust, and sunlight. Kilauea emits about 2,000 tons of sulfur dioxide each day during eruption, now mainly from the still-open vent at Pu‘u ‘O‘o.

Trade winds commonly disperse the volcano's gases, so that the concentration is not generally hazardous. However, sulfur dioxide fumes can be concentrated near ground cracks along and down-wind from lava tubes.

Scott - amazing I love it. What I love even more is the Andean Condor in the foreground - have a look - crop off the top, the red eye is in the middele, then you get the beak;bil to the right, al folded, like the real one, with the rifht red too. I love this pic. TFS

Hello Scott,
This is amazing... melting rock emerging from the ground. Very impressive, the colour of the lava is amazing and nicely contrasts with the other rocks.
I would even frame it tighter to get rid of the sky.
Anyway - fantastic shot!
