[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Dactylopteria orientalis - the Flying Gurnard derives its name from its large wing like pectoral fins and the French word "gurnard" meaning to grunt. They also have strong pelvic fins enabling them to "walk" on sandy bottoms.

When disturbed, they open up their wings (fins) and look like a swept wing delta jet fighter. This guy blends in nicely with the sandy pebbly ocean bottom.

I shot this image while snorkeling at Kahalulu Bay, Hawaii, a great place to snorkel with numerous tropical fish and the occasional Hawkbill Turtle, and various eels. Located south of Kona.
