This is a scanned in photo from our honeymoon in Hawaii. We rented a convertible and drove all around the island. My new bride and I got out and took photos, enjoying the beauty of nature, superb weather and the bliss of new love...
Then we heard the peel of wheels on gravel and noticed a white van tearing out of the parking area next to our car. My first thought was that our wallets had been stolen so we ran back to the car.
On close inspection, our wallets were still there as well as the over $100 in cash. What was missing was my camera case with over 5 rolls of film from our honeymoon up to that point.
In a furious rage that had never felt before and haven't felt since I leaped into the car and floored it in the direction the van had gone in a futile attempt to catch up with them. I don't know/care what I would have done if I had found them, but that is irrelevant. All I know is that I was 21 years old and it would not have been pretty nor in their favor.
I have a healthy contempt for memory thieves. I can only wonder if this is where some seedy tourist shops get their beautiful postcards—at the expense of unsuspecting tourists... |
