This is another entry in the moose challenge that Rick (adanac) and I have been playing.

My husband and I had been peacefully watching 4 moose in this small lake (Fishercap Lake). We were there a long time. Gradually three of the moose left the lake way down to our left. Bull moose generally are fairly docile in the spring, but this fellow decided he wanted to leave the lake where we were standing. Now we aren't so foolish as to not have the woods directly behind us and someone fatter, slower, and carrying heavier equipment than we, ahead of us!!! Anyway this guy wanted us to M O V E ! ...and move we did... into the trees.

We had the tripod and camera set up with a cable release and had been snapping photos for a while. This fellow started to display by beating his antlers against the water and slapping the water with his forelegs. Then he charged. It all happened within seconds. Without even looking through the viewfinder we grabbed the tripod and apparently released the shutter with the cable release at the same time. Then we ran into the trees. He stopped his charge and quietly exited the lake and walked past us. I said "apparently released the shutter" because we didn't know we even had this shot until we got back to camp!!!

We know someone who was photographing a bull moose in this same lake during the fall rutting season. The moose charged, picked up the $10,000 tripod/camera/lens with his antlers and flung it into the lake! We knew that story so weren't about to leave the tripod/camera when we ran.

So Rick...this is the best I can do for now!! : ) ... maybe ever!

Hi Evelynn
Definitely a more dangerous set of antlers than the ones I have posted today! A great action shot, especially as you suggest it was taken by pure luck rather than judgement. The splashing water really shows the power of this animal.
Kind Regards
Vinny

Hi Evelynn,
you know a little friendly competition can go a long ways but a shot of this sort has got to be very tough to be better or at least match!I like every thing I see about this capture and even I would be hard-pressed to get a photo such as this one.If it isn't a trump card,it is damned close!Wow!I love TrekNature and it's fine photographers as you and Rick are two of my favorite photogs. Thanks for making my dull Sunday a sunny Sunday as this is the sort of photo I live to see. Hello Evelynn,
What an adventure! You got to spend something for a good photo. But it was worth it. The result is sensational.
Fantastic photo in great sharpness and a perfect composition. Very impressive.
The life of a photographer can be hard.

Hello Evelynn

There was an old saying around here years ago.
Q:How do you stop a charging moose?
A:Take away it's credit cards.
This is a very dramatic image, and surely must have been an adrenaline rush.
Excellent capture of this display.
The lighting is well handled with lovely colour.
Super clarity.
Funny but I wish I was there to see this.

Hi Evelynn

OK - I admit it - I am SOOO jealous of this shot. Fantastic action shot - superb timing. I have never been to moose habitat at the right time to get good antlers :(

Hi Evelyn,

I love both the picture and your notes. An amazing shot and an amazing way to get it! He must have been beating that water hard to get such splashes. Love those antlers. Can't wait to see what Rick posts to try to beat this one.

This is an award winner..I know of two local papers and their editors who wold have loved this one Ev...as a matter of fact..I am going to keep this one on my docket for next spring...while they are around all year..and I have friends who sent kids to school with 45 mags in a rural area of bush south of Fairbanks...not for bear but for these...and in AK...well...wilderness, nature and all...it is a different and much more serious story...by the way she lives in Eugene sometimes..and mostly in Bend, but her still liviing parents are in Lincoln City..almost all of my Mountain Wilderness extended family are in Oregon..and as a matter of fact..so are many of my relatives..in Sherman County graves..and a couple in the Dalles!

Hi Evelynn!

No need to try to do better, it's already perfect and so exciting! The picture and the wonderful story you tell us in your notes make this an outstanding posting. I thought that sometimes I take too many risks when I search for my rock formations in wild river beds, but I realize that wildlife photographers live dangerous moments, too. That fellow would have hurt you badly...

Thank you for having shared this great adventure with us.

Kind regards

Markus

I see inter-continent photographer challanges are the fassion this season :) I follwed you's with Rick with great enthusiasm and i love the quality of the photos you both have been exhibiting.

This is indeed a magnificent capture!
The timing...should i even mention :) I'm stunned of how well you captured this in terms of sharpness, focus and exposure! The full-fontal POV is also impressive and the emotion it strucks the viewer with is fantastic.

Hello Evelynn,
Well anything I have would pale in comparison, my friend this is an outstanding capture with amazing action well captured. Just when I think I understand animals they do something unusual, I would of thought this bull would have minded you being around at all until rut. I saw this last night but couldn't get back to you as I was called out to work. But tonight I just had to pass along Kudos and say how great this is, I will still post my bull moose when I get a break and I'm home long enough, lol.

Hi Evelynn,
what a fine capture of this charging Moose!
That must have been VERY scary! :-)
Superb movement and action.
Very good sharpness.
Excellent composition.

Incredible work!

Hi Evelynn,
Excellent action shot of this gorgeous animal which is completely missing here in the UK but which I am very familiar with where I come from. Excellent capture of action showing clearly the important parts of the head but still lots of splashing water. Good composition, sharp details of the Moose and great lighting.

Yee Haa...what a story Evelynn. Photography can be so exciting, you really captured an excellent action shot here. Plus the story that goes along with this image is really great. Bravo Evelynn, well done.
TFS Janice

Aha, I recognize my favorite lake, Eveynn. So, let me get this right, you had your camera on a tripod, this guy charged, you snapped a picture, then grabbed the tripod and ran? You don't remember snapping the picture. Of course, with a 1/2000 you could have been running away at top speed and still come out with a clear shot. But, since the horizon is so level, my hunch is it had to be solidly on the tripod. Reflexes of steel, I'd say. Amazing.

Hi Evelynn,

You have capured well the expression of power of moose charging you in the water. The point of view is showing the details of the action. The subject is well framed. The light is enhancing the colors. Have a nie day.

Hello Evelynn,
Wow, what a superb capture of this Moose swimming towards you!! It must have been quite scary! A great moment showing fine details and I like the splashes making it very dramatic!

Wow, this is a real stunner. The agression of the moos is so well captured. I am sure that you an Jerry were slighly shaking when you saw him comming running at you. The accidental release of the shutter certainly resulted in a awesome moment.

Niek

You were definitely at the right place right time, This is really fantastic with the young bull at a raging momment, he needs to settle down and get a girl friend.
